Tue, 15th May 2007

Michael Essien has been named Chelsea Player of the Year for 2007.

The award, presented by the club's life vice-president Lord

Attenborough, was the climax of a ceremony in Battersea, London.

Essien beat fellow nominees Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho to the

award, voted for by the supporters.

Essien's 40-yard thunderbolt against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge also

won him the supporters' choice for the Chelsea Goal of the Season for

2007.

That award, presented by Match of the Day's Gary Lineker, was the

first announced.

The Chelsea Young Player of the Year award has gone to another African

- John Mikel Obi.

At the end of his first season at the club, the 20-year-old Nigerian

midfielder collected the adidas sponsored honour from Chelsea legend

Charlie Cooke.

The second honour of the night was the Young Talent award for the

Academy player who has impressed the most, chosen by director of youth

development Frank Arnesen, Academy manager Neil Bath and reserve team

coach Brendan Rodgers.

That went to 17-year-old striker Ben Sahar.

Didier Drogba was voted the Samsung Players' Player of the Year by his

team-mates and all the staff at training headquarters and he received

a trophy from another famous Chelsea striker of the past, Gianluca

Vialli.

A new award for Outstanding Achievement went to Petr Cech in

recognition of his remarkable comeback from serious injury.

Appropriately it was presented by Peter Bonetti.

What were the fans chanting at Big Ears when he came out to present the award, I couldn't make it out? He wasn't amused and I was pleased to see our fans didn't lick the tw*t's arse.

To be fair, he took it in good part - I'm sure he was expecting it.

That's a shame, I was hoping it was something much more offensive. I can't stand the man. :)
