Where has all this foreign investment gone?

Only a copule of weeks before pre-season starts again and clubs are pulling out of the transfer market faster than a born again Christian.

Now we have been pretty candid about the fact we won't be spending big this summer so there is no great surprise that we have not been making big money headlines however with the exception of Man Utd there is little else happening.

However were we not told that Liverpool, West Ham and Villa were all going to have cash to splash courtesy of their new owners. There are already rumours (and I stress rumours) that Liverpool's new owners are rethinking how much money they are going to let Benitez spend and Villa appear to be dormant just now (West Ham it could be a little different as they probably need to wait for the outcome of the Tevez situation).

Haivng said that maybe it will all start to kick off once players and agents are back from holidays.

Pre-season is dull at the best of times, but it is even more dull when there are no transfers going on.

Now I'm guessing that made sense when you typed it, Loz. But... icon_cool.gif

the transwer window as a whole has been surprisingly slow, not only because of the supposed investment at the clubs you mentioned, but also the massive TV deal. I the spanish league finishing delays deals there, but there has been pretty much f**k all anywhere.

I seriously hope we start to do something and i am beginning to get a little concerned. Pre season is only about 2-3 weeks away now and the last thing you want is for new signings to miss out on the chance to integrate into the team in this period.

That is the point that got me thinking as well Rob - the last thing you want as a club is for a load of new players to miss the lions share of pre-season training as it can have a knock on effect for quite a while after the season has started. That is why although our signings have all been fairly low key I am glad we have them in place now so that they start pre-season with the rest of the squad. I wouldn't want to be in anothe rposition like we were with Ashley Cole where he joined at the last second before the transfer window closed.

What is the feeling amongst Liverpool fans about why this supposed caoital injection seems to be slow in coming to fruition?

It's Liverpool. I'm guessing someone pinched it... icon_cool.gif

feelings vary and i think it depends on what you choose to beleive from the info the papers have pushed out. It is difficult as no-one actually knows what is going on behind the scenes, despite some 'connected' people letting on what they know. It would seem that there is something going on between the two guys over who will be represented on the board and in what authority, although Gillette has tried to dispell this.

I'm starting to get worried but then there are these continual links to malouda and torres (amongst others) for big money, so i dont know. We have to wait til the end of the window to really assess and see if they 'put up' or not, but i am getting frustrated (and that is one general feeling amongst fans) at the time it is taking to get people in.

having said all that, i dont want us to buy too many players, despite the need to strengthen a number of areas. I would rather we prioritised the most important areas and spent proper money on them than doing what we have done before and buying for all of the positions at the bracket below.

If we sign a top class winger (dont personally know if malouda fits that bill or not, although i am concerned at players from france after the finger burning we have had in the past) and a real goalscorer (again, i dont think Torres is an out and out goal machine, his stats certainly dont suggest he is) then leave the rest with a couple of squad players like benayoun coming in, i'll be chuffed.

We have more chance of challenging with a couple of class additions that we do bringing in a whole host of players similar in level to those they would replace.

There are a lot of factors that influence the transfer merry-go-round - contracts finish on June 30th, the Spanish League has only just ended, many players are away on their hols, clubs are trying not to look too keen too quickly (might push the price up), and many are trying to look like they haven't much to spend (perhaps Liverfool?). We got caught when Abramovich came in, splashing money left right and centre so there was a mad scramble by clubs and agents to push their players in our direction, and we ended up with some real duds that cost the Earth and didn't have the slightest feeling for the club (V*r*n and Mutu spring to mind). I think a lot of clubs are being cautious as a result, making sure they get the best price for the right player. It's taken us 4 years to adopt a more sensible approach and hopefully we can avoid the Argentinian problem that has seen us spend millions for very little return. I never want to see the situation where we buy big and then give them away for nothing - really stupid business.

I think it'll take a few weeks to get going, what with the South American tournament going on and the ANC in the new year putting people off buying anyone from that continent. I think Manyoo have virtually done their buying, as have we (maybe one more in for both) and The Arse will have to sell to buy, but it's the new kids on the block (in terms of new owners) who will be spending next month - your Liverfools, Citeh, Wet Spam and the like.

ive heard a rumour that the yanks at liverpool have told fat rafa he can only spend if he sells. this has caused a huge ruction between them and hes threatened to quit. now that would be funny.

Couldn't agree more Jack. I don't care how much money we have, the Veron and Crespo situations (albeit much more the former than the latter) really p*ssed me off and were quite frankly an embarrassment for the entire club.#

never again! 128.gif
