i think we need another striker given shevchenko and kalou havent proved them selfs in the premiership (although shevchenko should have no problems adjusting what so-ever!) 3 strikers wont be enough if we are to challenge for everything.. presume some one gets injured.. with out cursing any of the 3 strikers.. just look whats happend to joe, anything can happen. leaving us with a major problem.

the person i would like to see us sign.. even if its just on a short term deal (2years with the option to 3??) is anelka, he is very fast, got a eye for goal and would be very cheap.. arround ?7-?8million

If we don't suffer from too many injuries we can still occasionally play 4-4-2 and still be able to rest one of our strikers. Kalou can play as a striker as well as a winger on either side. Crespo's departure will propably give SWP more chances to play.

Come to think of it...has SWP ever played as a striker? If disaster strikes Drogba and SWP up front wouldn't be the worst idea I've heard. I mean a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 with Drogba as a targetman and SWP using his pace to run rings around the opponent's defenders(and maybe even score a goal or two icon_lol.gif ). I know Robben has played as a striker for his country, but I'd rather see him as a winger.

Sign Anelka!!!

Is this on the premise that we do sell Gallas and that no team is allowed to enter a football tournament unless it has at least one cantankerous sod!!

I'd rather sign Ashley Cole than Nicolas Anelka and I would rather allow Mini Loz to play for Roberto's Dad's U8 team than see us sign Ashley Cole.

Pauly - any space in the U16 team for G4 - he is a large lad, immobile, and thinks the sweeper formation refers to his part time job in Burger King - an improvement for your defence I'm sure you will agree!

anelka wouldnt be such a big problem, sure he has abit of a attitude (a very big understatement icon_lol.gif ) but on his day he is quality, besides what other premiereship proven striker is available with out paying big money and!! with out the out-come resulting in chelsea looking like fools?

Isn't it just! And he had an attitude when he was first choice and scoring goals for fun - just imagine how much of a bloody pain he will be when he is spending the vast majority of his time scoring goals on training pitches and swapping recipe's with Kalou on the bench!

Well there appears to be a few free scoring kids in Pauly's u16 league, he lost his next game 11-0 icon_lol.gif

Off the top of my head there is none however I think we need to get away from this idea that we can keep happy three strikers who would all be first team players in other top teams when we will often only play with one up front. Just now we have two recognised centre forwards (Drogba is recognised, he was out at Tesco's last night and they wouldn't let him park in the disabled spot, he has been busted for fraudulently using a blue badge), a young striker in Kalou and an up and coming talent in Sinclair. Maybe this is the time to take the chance and give the two younger kids a chance as and when the opportunity arises.

icon_lol.gif am i missing something here? biggrin.gif

i can see your reasons for having faith that the 3 stikers wont get injured but unless drogba toughens up i cant see it. i would much prefer to see the squad with 4 recognised strikers then just 3 and be short of cover is a long term injury occur's.

and the reason why i said we should sign anelka on a 2 year contract with the option for a third is entirely because of his attitude, i believe jose would sort him out, but then again i could be wrong and after is first full season he has the option of running down is contract look for another club, or do well and get himself that extra 3rd year.

Just to make some of you bounce around on your chairs again there are more stories coming out of Brazil that Tevez may be on the move sooner rather than later.

So you reckon Jose was at Corinthians' match to scout Tevez after all. :?

Not sure about Kenyon, but I remember Jose saying that he was there to watch a game and not to scout anyone particularily and he would be very surprised to see Tevez in a Chelsea shirt at the start of the season.

In January then...? icon_lol.gif

I think if JM knew that Crespo was bound to leave Chelsea in the summer, there was no way he would have let Carlton Cole and Gudjohnsen go in the summer. And anyway, I'm sure Jose said Kalou is capable of playing as both winger and striker in a press conference. So so what if we don't have a big target man as our main striker in the 4-3-3, we played some of our best football 2 seasons ago when Gudjohnsen was playing with Duff and Robben either side of him and we scored the most amout of goals then.

I really would be appauled if we signed another striker, no matter what calibre he is, and if we were to I'm pretty sure it would have been Benni McCarthy. We were very stongly linked with him last season and in my opinion he would be what Jose would want.

It depends on two issues - what formation we end up playing, and just how good Kalou is.

My vote is to not sign anyone at this stage - leave it for 6 months until the January transfer window.

In that six months, we will have enough time to establish which formation works best for us. If we are still playing 4-3-3 for the majority of games, then three strikers is enough. If we have had a major change in tactics, and play more often than not with two strikers, then maybe we do need someone.

Also in that six months, we should know if Kalou has what it takes to play as an out-and-out striker on his own. If he does, then there is no need to sign anyone. If he doesn't, and is more of a winger who can play as a second-striker when needed (like Robben or Cole) then we probably should sign someone who can in January.

Even if things go badly, and we want to play 4-4-2 all the time, but Sheva or Drogba is injured, and Kalou is not good enough, we will still be OK until January. The Champion's League will not yet be at the knockout stage, and we should still be challanging for the Premiership regardless.

Loz,

PK said that he would be "surprised" if Tevez was signed this summer. Not sure how that would work out since he'd be the one signing him!

But that does leave the door slightly ajar in case we find we need to.

But my personal feeling is that Jose Mourinho has said time and again that we will be working with a much trimmer squad this season, and thus I would also be personally surprised if we signed another striker. JM has ranted and raved about Kalou, and though I have never seen anything special in the kid in the handful of games I have watched Fejenoord play last season, I am hoping to see what the fuss is all about when he plays for us.

If we play the 4-3-3, I think Sheva, Didier and Kalou should be enough. And yes, Kalou can play the center role, maybe not as a Didier would, but then Sheva wouldn't play the same way Didier did anyway. So I doubt JM would have any hesitation to play Kalou as the ST in a 4-3-3 if need be.

Cheers,

Butch

We currently have J.Cole, Robben, SWP and Kalou all on our books ready for the new season. Unless i've lost the basic ability to count, that is 4 wingers, the same number we had last season. Now last season lack of game time action eventually lead to the departure of Damien Duff and this was when were playing the 4-3-3 all the time. If we start trying to play the 4-4-2 diamond now, it will surely lead to even less game time for the wingers currently at the club.

We won't- 3 old strikers is too difficult to keep happy with 1 up front primarily, and the way we are going is squad happiness. Robben and Kalou can play up, the only problem we may have is if we have an injury to a winger we would be short. Which is not unlikely with the way they play

I guess with this new mentality of verstile players to cover multiple positions - problems will arise when one of these versitile players (like Kalou) gets injured.

Suddenly, we are short on cover for both wingers and strikers.
