I totally missed this in the news.

Roy Scheider died a couple of days ago after a four year battle with multiple myeloma.

Obviously Jaws is the role that will spring to most people's minds (and rightly so - OK ignore the series from Jaws 3 onwards but the original is an all time classic, the second reasonable and Roy got the hell out of there before the 3rd!) however he was also excellent in The French Connection, Marathon Man, All That Jazz and 2010 (at least I liked it, probably the only one)

Strange to think he would actually have played Michael Vronsky in The Deer Hunter if it wasn't for the fact he was contractually obliged to do Jaws 2 and he was also down to play Rambo in First Blood. I think it is probably fair to say that things worked out for the best on both those counts as I can't see him being as good as De Niro and Stallone in those two roles.

Anyway by all accounts he was a genuinely nice bloke and it is always sad when people who you can call that pass away (be they famous or otherwise).

Never a major star himself, he managed to appear in some great films. Sad loss. RIP.

I heard a slightly different story about his involvement with The Deerhunter and Jaws 2. He signed to play Michael in The Deerhunter but quit over an argument about the script rather than contractual reasons. He also didn't fancy appearing in Jaws 2, but the studio offered to overlook him walking out on the Deerhunter and count him appearing in Jaws 2 as the final two films of his contract.

Interesting - find it hard to believe anyone could have walked from The Deerhunter over the script, if that is the case it is surely one of those decisions where you spend the rest of your life trying to kick your own ar*e!!
