This time he's negative about our youth set-up:

http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/ ... 37,00.html

He seems to think our first team squad should by now be full of 18 year olds, as Arnesen's been in post for 3 years.

he makes some points that we can't argue about in terms of amount of money being spent compared with city etc, but doesn't state the obvious difference between the two clubs in that chelsea are chasing silverware and can't afford to carry inexperienced players through games while they learn the trade...it's the same arguement for the arse...jose said it himself about how he envied wenger being given the time with no pressure to win trophies while bringing young players through...fact is if we play the kids in the league cup for example we'll be accused of devaluing the competition...we do need to get some players in the first team eventually, but if we're getting 16-year-olds it's obvioussy going to take a while...also i think the guys in charge are realistic enough to know that a lot won't make it but are hoping to still turn them into pros and sell them for a profit in the process

The eldest player of the youth academy turns 18 on 9th September this year. Do we want to put young players into the first team even before they sign a professional contract and have gained enough experience?

As far as the reserves are concerned, I defintely expect players like Stoch, Di Santo, Sahar, Jimmy Smith, Mancienne etc. to step up in a season or two or probably appear in a game against a lowly-ranked opposition.

But, academy is not the only one to blame, having managers like Grant at the helm can't help the youth much. He hardly tries to experiment with the current first-team squad (for example : he doesn't want to change the formation from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 to accomodate Anelka, but instead, play him out of position on the wings).

That is killing the youth set up obviously, Grant should instead of experimenting with Anelka where he played well for Fenerbahce according to their fan on this forum, have put a couple of 16 year olds on the wings and gone 4-4-2 smack_head.gif

Can we turn anything else printed anywhere into a swipe at Grant?

your right chippy, grant should basically play the youth fa cup finalists in the next game v wigan, if he doesnt then hes destroying the entire fabric of the club.....

If we play the youth finalist team against wigan on monday, and get beat then our title hope will be over. It's too risky

i was being sarcastic singablue. the press will pick fault about anything we do. they place arsenal on a pedestal for bringing youth through, but fail to mention theyve won bugger all for the last 3 or 4 years.

In Singablue's defense, it must be hard for non English fans to understand our Sarcasm, more so as it's normally directed at the Manager and not in favour of him icon_lol.gif

When you say English do you mean the language or the the people?, because English is the primary language spoken in Singapore.

Amongst the current crop of so called journalists who regularly write with cynical envy about Roman Abramovich and his football club Duncan Castles strikes me as being the most amateurish. His sniping style is always prefaced by damning faint praise (in this instance its vicariously aimed at Frank Arneson) which is always followed by unfavourable comparison with other coaching staff, other clubs, other clubs’ players, other clubs’ inferior finances, etc, etc, yawn, yawn. Look at his last paragraph to see the real reason for this piece. On second thoughts, don’t bother, it’s not worth a return trip, so I’ll just quote it here…

"Cassell is careful not to criticise Chelsea's cash-rich approach, admitting that City now cast their net across Europe, but he is eager to underline his programme's success with silverware. “We're desperate to win the Youth Cup,” he says. “But if we don't we'll say well done to the opposition and we'll regroup and get on with the production of players, which is what we're primarily there for.”

Surprise, surprise, it was all about a rallying call for Citeh when they play against the Big Bad Blues on Wednesday. All in all, shoddy journalism from a third rate hack who, incidentally, is no longer invited on to Chelsea TV’s Paper View. Wonder why?
