especially if your club is one that has become more of a corporate brand than a football club and drifting further away from its core support with each passing season as a result.

Sums it up really

Really really interesting read. I didnt agree with everything he said, and business is unfortunately business is many circumstances, but he should really consider sending that to the club and hopefully Roman gets to read it. It might open a few eyes around the club

I think the whole point is this is the club's mantra, they don't 'open eyes around the club' - they want to spoon feed us what they want to tell us, hence hiring a PR man who used to work for the US government.

This also means you won't find any WMD's - 'Word on Mourinho's Departure'

meh. nothing to see here. sounds like your average whingings from a low-level corporate employee who is at the bottom of the totem pole. i don't really think this is indicative of the "new" more monolithic and uncaring face of CFC. this is simply business.

i agree with mannyjello. what exactly does he want then? does he want us to stop acting like a business and go back to the way clubs were run? because if that happened i guarantee we would fall behind utd, arsenal and even the dippers very, very quickly. football is now big business. even in the lower leagues its becoming more ruthless and businesslike. thats the way of the world unfortunately.

good read, thanks for the article.

I agree that every club is heading in that direction, and we can't pretend that we weren't going in this direction under bates before abramovich, but that doesn't mean it's fine to get desensitized to this kind of trend, and nor does it make it any better or more excusable.

so for me this article isn't about evil roman abramovich, but about the way football, certainly in britain, is heading, and it's a shame.

I agree Gullit.

At least under Bate's he'd have a pop at someone in his programme notes or set the record straight with a few words here and there. You at least felt some sort of connection with the club etc. The club now seems to be just a faceless conglomerate, moving further and further away from being a football club, as we know it, with each passing year, still I suppose that's all part of being a brand, like Coke / Pepsi or McDonald's.

As you say it's a shame

Bluenut, I guess the thing I was getting at was Roman. I know nobody has Roman's email or anything, but he is a football man first when it comes to Chelsea. He has made some positive strides on reconnecting the club with the past to the liking of the supporters before, namely the reinclusion of club legends and the redesigning of the badge.

I think if Roman knew that the supporters are feeling these sentiments of frustration, disconnection, or disillusionment, then I think he would try and take steps to correct that. Business concerns or not. I know thats a naive outlook, but thats what I would hope.

The badge was redesigned because Bates owned the copyright to the one he created and procedes from sales would make their way to him, it had nothing to do with getting back to our roots, it was all about the money!

I honestly don't think Roman cares what 'we' think, I'm afraid. It's all about him, and his club. Last January(07) when we played Wigan, and the 'rift' rumours began, the crowd sung 'stand up for the special one' and Jose Mourinho' throughout the game and didn't sing Romans name once, he didn't like it and refused to back the manager, who the fans clearly supported, in the coming transfer window.

Now don't get me wrong the man has done wonders for the club, but I doubt he'll ever bow the 'fan pressure' and if we ever come across as ungratefull in the same way Liverpool and Manu have shown the displeasure of takeovers, then I think he'll just sail off into the sunset.

It's Roman's ball, he'll take all the throw-in. corners, free kicks and penalties and if the other kids don't like it, he's gonna take his ball home and not let us play with it.
