Reports on Sky Sports News suggest that Barnsley have signed Jacob Mellis on loan from Chelsea.

The young midfielder has signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge, keeping him at the club until 2013 and joins Mark Robins' Barnsley on loan to gain some first team experience.

The 20 year old has made one appearance for Chelsea, coming on as a substitute in the 89th minute in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Zilina in the UEFA Champions League in November this season.

Confirmed:

Reserve team midfielder Jacob Mellis has gone on loan to Barnsley. The 20-year-old, who last week signed a new contract that will keep him at Chelsea until 2013, will remain at Oakwell until 8 May.

Barnsley, managed by former Manchester United player Mark Robins, are currently 13th in the Championship.

Mellis made his first-team debut as a last-minute substitute against MSK Zilina in November. He was on loan at Southampton in the first half of last season.
