Sorry, Loz. I totally do not agree with you. Like Star, I believed our season was shot the day we sacked, Jose. If he were in charge, even if we did not start as brightly, I would still believe we had a chance. With Grant, while I won't pin it down entirely to him, I don't believe we have a chance and our best shot is at 3rd place. I believe it is down mostly to the "upheaval" of Jose's departure and the "learning period" under the guidance of the new manager - both for the man in charge as well as the players. I also do NOT believe we will win the Champions League. We WILL have to play a top team with a top manager somewhere down the line and I don't believe Grant has the capability of out-thinking a top calibre manager. He has NOT been able to change games for us so far with anything he has done. I'm not saying he won't improve, and I'm not saying it might not be down to the lack of suitable personnel, but the reasons are not important. I DO believe we have the players to win the league. It is crazy to think otherwise. But we need a manager who is capable to bringing the best out of them. But I didn't mean to be all doom and gloom. Admittedly, I've lost a bit of appetite seeing as to how we've had the hope ripped out of us by a silly decision to sack Jose, but I also have to admit we've done much better than I expected. I'm proud of the players, and to a certain extent kudos to Grant for steadying the ship so quickly. I can't believe the luck we've had with injuries, and now suspensions. To be without Cech, Cudicini, Terry, Carvalho, ACole, Essien, Lampard, Malouda, Ballack and Drogba (at various times) is just astounding to me. First, I'm thankful for Alex as he has done a very impressive job for us indeed when called upon. Second, Mikel has grown, and while his temper is still questionable, his potential is very exciting indeed. Third, I am still hopeful with Sheva. He has worked his socks off for us trying to disprove all the doubters, and while he has lost a bit of confidence and a lot of pace, his efforts are looking more and more likely to pull him out of the slump. Still, he really just doesn't fit into our "style" of play. Ballack returning from injury hopefully will help. If any of the other top sides had to play without 4-5 of their best players for any length of time, they too would struggle. Our players and our team are to be commended. So, here's hoping for a better 2008. I don't have anything personal against Grant. I just don't think he is the calibre of manager we should be looking at. I never did, and while I am warming to him, I get a distinctly "Ranieri" feel about him. I want a ruthless manager that will stand toe to toe with the best of them. He doesn't inspire confidence is I guess what I wanted to say. First things first, let's get all our injured and suspended players back and then see where that takes us. I guess the Cups are still a possibility if our big players step up a notch. Cheers, Butch

Got your wish - it was Shawn-Wright Phillips instead. I'm so disappointed. It seemed like such a lazy and irresponsible swipe of the ball when what we needed was composure. That was an important point in the match and an equalizer would have done us the world of good. Overall, I must say the players battled hard and players such as Mikel, Paulo, Alex and Ashley Cole in particular need to be praised for their efforts. Lamps and Sheva also played at an expected standard. But the likes of Maka, Joe and Shawn were a bit disappointing. Cech's mistake was also uncharacteristic and disappointing. How ironic that Gallas was the one to take advantage and help his new club beat his old one. Despite all the injuries, I felt we battled on well. However, without Drogba, we were unable to pin them back at all and so our offense really lived and died with Joe and Shawn, who as I have already described, were uneffective for the most part. It wasn't a pretty match but rather a war of attrition. Both sides dished it out pretty well, though I have to say Flamini and Fabregas were over the top a few times. For us, Joe made one bad tackle, and JT was pretty naughty with his tackle on Fabregas as well. But I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the match and though we lost, I cannot really complain. Their keeper made two excellent saves (from Mikel and Sheva) and ours made one costly blunder. I think that was the difference. By the way, I really think Sheva should be taking our direct free kicks the majority of the time, with Lamps taking them when they are more central and a little further out. Mikel should NOT be arguing with Sheva over who takes these shots. It paints a very unorganized picture and makes me feel Grant does not have full control over the dressing room. I'll be honest. If Jose was in charge, I'd be disappointed with the defeat. As it currently stands, I didn't expect us to even be in pecking distance so this defeat and the fact that it leaves us 6 points behind Arsenal does not really concern me. I'd be happy with a third place finish, to be honest, and hopefully the players can step up a gear in the CL (although the logic behind this is a little lost on me). Cheers, Butch

To be honest, I am immensely proud of the Scots over the course of the qualifying campaign, and particularly in this match. No way did we deserve to lose this game, even if a draw would in all likelihood have eliminated us anyway. The Italians were really just hanging on once Scotland equalized, and although clear cut chances were few and far between, confidence was on the rise and even Cannavaro accepted they were getting worried. The free kick at the end that led to the winner was a blatant mistake, and that ultimately is the most frustrating thing about it. I think the performance merited a positive result, which a draw would have been, considering the opposition. Anyway, keep this up and the future is certainly bright. Cheers, Butch

I really believe, even if Jose has tried to discourage any approach in the past, that the English FA will be doing everything in their might to lure Jose to become the next England boss and that Terry and Lampard will be key figures in this attempt. Just think about it, there is no one better. Alan Shearer? I don't think so. Jose knows intimately all there is to know about the English football scene, and he already knows better than anyone about 5 or 6 of the England regulars that used to play for him at Chelsea. He will add some much needed self belief, and unite the dressing room, not to mention his tactics for the most part should fit England quite nicely. Obviously, England are not going to be able to play exactly like Jose's Chelsea as they lack a Makalele, etc..., but I do believe Jose will be able to do wonders with the raw material available to him. England need a "winning" mentality, and the ability to grind out results when it matters. Jose excelled at that with Chelsea, for the most part. Cheers, Butch
