Was listening to an interview of Harry Redknapp the other day and he as talking about loaning out his former West Ham players (e.g. Lamps, Ferdinand, etc...) to lower division clubs to get them the experience of football down there (and getting kicked lumps into them) and he thought it was a great idea for them, except for Joey who he described as too precious! I always liked to joke around with my fellow Chelsea-mad family that I wish he played for Scotland! Cheers, Butch

I think this may come as a bit of a surprise. I wanted us to sign Bridgey from the start, and was adamant that he would do just as well for us as Soxy used to (my favorite Chelsea left back of all time). I've been very happy with Bridgey's performances for Chelsea and hope he stays with us for the rest of his career. I also never liked Cole as a person (though I don't know him personally). He's always been one of the main targets for abuse when we played Arsenal. Just something about him puts me off. BUT, I always had to admit there was something about him as a player that made me wish we had someone like him playing for us. He had composure on the ball, was quick at getting forward, quick at recovering and getting back, aware of the threats in his own penalty area, guarded his post very well on corners and set pieces, and he had shooting ability in the opposing penalty area when he had his chances. He used to be a decent crosser/passer of the ball as well at Arsenal. I don't think we've ever seen the best of Ashley here at Chelsea. He's been competent at best and just has never really excelled. But I'm placing my vote on all things considered. I do think Cole will improve and, provided he can get his off-the-field antiques in check, I believe he will prove himself to have been a good signing (not considering the Gallas swap of course). I do believe that of the two, Cole is the marginally better left back. However, as I said in the beginning, both players are needed as they offer slightly different options when they play, AND they can play together. We have the best two left backs in the country without a shadow of a doubt (I know some will say Clichy is better, but I beg to differ). Cheers, Butch

Though I respect your opinion, I simply don't agree. I don't think he's settled in quite just yet, and just like Pizarro (and worse), the odd game here and there just doesn't allow him to get into the run of things. Yes, he's made some highlighted mistakes, but overall, compared to the number of minutes he's been on the pitch, he hasn't done as badly as you make him out to have done. If he's happy to stay as fourth choice (and has been mentioned, there is also the highly-rated Ivanovic who could push him back further), then I'm fine with that. I'm all for bringing through the youth as well, but if Mancienne were good enough, he'd nudge Ben Haim off the bench. Cheers, Butch

I was really disappointed we sold him. I really liked the look of the lad. Of course, he lacked the vision of Maka, but he was dynamic, could pass the ball pretty well, and he had quite an engine. I really thought we had a gem on our hands. Surprised he didn't figure more for Arsenal, to be honest. They certainly don't have a Maka in their squad! Cheers, Butch

I'm happy to have him as fourth choice center back; heck, I'd be okay with him as third choice center back. He ain't that bad. I'm definitely pro-Anelka, but I have some reservations just like most others. However, so far so good. I really like the look of him. His composure on the ball is something I've always wanted in a striker that played for Chelsea. We've had some good ones but composure on the ball hasn't been an attribute of a lot of them. Anelka is calm and his skill and speed allows him a bit of time to look up and choose what to do. I also like his eye for the pass to a team mate in a better position. I think that creates uncertainty in defenders and gives us an extra edge in attack. By the way Callista, I don't think Sheva is past it. I'm concerned about the number of injuries he's suffering at the moment, which may be a sign of an old body or a bruised and "losing" ego. But on the pitch, he's been steadily improving.
