Posted August 6, 200915 yr Was down in London for the Emirates Cup and would just like to thank all the Chelsea boys who came along to support us. Really enjoyed the game couple of seasons ago when you were up at Ibrox. Think its the only time i've been to a game and both sets of fans were singing the same songs great day. Good luck for the forthcoming season and all the best from Rangers!
August 6, 200915 yr I know i post it every time, but its got to be done. All hail The Gers - the second best team in the world...
August 6, 200915 yr I'd love it, really love it if we could ever get drawn against each other to play in Europe.
August 7, 200915 yr Author That would be a fantastic occasion if we got each other in europe. Who knows it may happen this year in the group stage. Or maybe even next year when it will be Champions v Champions.... failing that another friendly would be good. I'd like to see them make it an annual thing.
August 7, 200915 yr I know that we have this allegiance with rangers but where does it actually stem from, i have heard many myths but just wondering if anyone knows the real story
August 7, 200915 yr Author Apparently in the 60's exc. English supporters would chant either Rangers or Celtic from the terraces and I suppose due to Celtic's ties with the Irish and insistance to sing pro-IRA and Anti-British songs an allegiance with Rangers was formed. Just one of many myths.

English supporters would chant either Rangers or Celtic from the terraces and I suppose due to Celtic's ties with the Irish and insistance to sing pro-IRA and Anti-British songs an allegiance with Rangers was formed. Just one of many myths. I remember playing Rangers when I was a kid in the80's (I think - may have been earlie 90's) at Stamford Bridge for someone's testamonial, I can't remember who's and the Shed-end were singing 'We all agree, Chelsea and Rangers are magic'' Also remember the thunderbird hats (bobble hats with the boble cut off) with the Chelsea badge one side and the Rangers badge on the other
August 7, 200915 yr As Rangers1973 says, many English clubs' fans used to chant Rangers or Celtic at games. Liverpool, Arsenal & Man.Utd have long been associated with Septic for various reasons, either due to a Catholic and/or Irish tradition in the club. I can remember Arsenal fielding a team of 11 Irishmen in the 70's (from both sides of the border). I also remember the Shed being divided about 70/30 in favour of Rangers round about 1968-71 (ish). But it went to almost 100% Rangers after that, mainly due to the IRA's activities and the Septic fans' habit of glorifying in them. At least, that's how I remember it, but I could well be wrong. Also, the Ron Harris Testimonial in 1971 at the Bridge against Rangers probably helped. Rarely was a bigger away support seen at Chelsea, and this was a November evening game in honour of a Chelsea player. Much respect was earnt by the Gers fans for that! Personally, Rangers have always been my second club since the mid 60's, about the same time I started following Chelsea. This was mainly due to my being half-Scots, but also to do with my uncle giving me a programme from the Rangers v Real Zaragoza game (1966?) - it just captured my imagination, and that was it, I was hooked! The fact that Gers played in blue didn't hurt any either :D I'm pretty sure the game that Bluenut is referring to is the Chelsea v Rangers game for the Bradford City Fire Fund. This was on 16 May 1985 - Chelsea won 3-2 and the crowd was recorded as being 7,239 which was total b*llocks. I was in the North Stand end with the Gers fans, and there were at least that many Gers fans, not to mention the thousands of Chelsea. Throughout the game the Shed were singing "We love you Rangers, oh yes we do" and the Gers fans replied in kind - great atmosphere! Shame the old bill were so thick that night - they tried to keep the Gers fans behind after the game "in case of trouble" when all the Chelsea & Rangers fans wanted to do was have a good drink together. Needless to say it all kicked off at the North Stand exit with us charging the old bill in one big mob to get out and into the pubs - a great time was had by all, with the possible exception of Plod :P
August 7, 200915 yr Author Yeh I thought that could have been the start of it for most people. I've been down to the Bridge a few times and there are always Chelsea-Rangers t-shirts and scarfs on sale outside the ground. Needless to say I have a few in the house! When you were up at Ibrox it was the same all the same songs with the joint of ... Rangers starting stand up if you hate Celtic and Chelsea joingin in to Chelsea starting Who the f**k are Man Utd? and Rangers joining in. In the pubs afterwards it was also a great atmosphere with the nice loud chant of Chelsea-Rangers!

Ah, must have been another game - Roberts was still at Spuds and Souness at Sampdoria back in '85. I've just had a look in my "Big Boys Book Of Boring Old B*llocks" to see if I could find the game you might have gone to, and the only one I could find with Roberts & Souness on opposite sides was in May 1989. Chelsea 84/85 (Souness guesting) v Chelsea 88/89 (with Roberts). Ring any bells? I can remember a similar sounding tackle though, at Highbury round about 70/71-ish. 50/50 ball, Arse so-called hardman ( ) Peter Storey charging towards it on the halfway line, Chopper Harris steaming in from the opposite direction. The ground went almost silent as they met, there was a loud crunch, then Chopper stood up, dusted himself down and passed the ball to a team-mate. Storey didn't get up for about 5 minutes, and was treated to thousands of us Chelsea fans singing the "Funeral March" to him from the Clock End :D
August 7, 200915 yr The fact that Gers played in blue didn't hurt any either  I actually dont think the Chelsea-Rangers affiliation would be nearly what it is if Rangers werent blue. I also like Rangers and support them in their own league and cups. Their fans are very good and pretty much walk all over Celtic from what I've seen.

Ive got some magic footage of Chelsea/Bears singing together in the concourse of the Broomloan Road stand at half time. I put it on you tube somewhere. Great stuff. Edited August 7, 200915 yr by bjd

August 7, 200915 yr I know i post it every time, but its got to be done. All hail The Gers - the second best team in the world... Absolutely - that map just sums it up. Seeing Chelsea and Rangers play in a competitive match would just be the weirdest thing for me. I would be desperate for each team to score but gutted if we lost a goal but I was originally a Chelsae man (boy) so I would go for Chelsea. As far as the affinity goes between the clubs then thats more straightforward - where I come from for Chelsea read Rangers and vice versa. Its not just a club thing - its a type of person you are thing. The values, tradition, beliefs and faith you have in something are the kind of things that would steer you towards both clubs. Fair enough there is the Blues Brothers of Chelsea, Rangers and Linfield but beyond that if you think Chelsea then you think Rangers, I think. Both clubs go beyond football and others despise our sense of these values and our loyalty to them. When you support either club you can't ignore their loyalty, their traditional British values and recognition of history, their appreciation of past and ongoing military commitment and their general sense of whats just 'right'. There is a natural affinity between the clubs but it is that, a natural affinity. As far as Celtic goes the some members of this forum should listen to the Celtic song - "and if you know you're history", to realise why there is a gulf between our clubs. If thats not enough tune in a little longer and you'll hear songs glorifying in British soldiers dying, songs celebrating terrorist attacks on Britain and allegance to any anti British organisation including Al Quaeda, the Taliban and any IRA organisation that actually admits to still existing. If you're still unsure have just a brief look at the history of their 'best fans in the World' who used to keep their lights on to guide German bombers and still murder our soldiers - not party political but just going by the songs they sing........
