ThunderDan Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 (edited) I saw this scary movie callled "The Orphanage" recently, and I wonder what is the best horror movie? moi Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 never seen the shiningany good? I think the fact that he put it in his top 5 is a wee bit of a clue!
Maksimov Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Shining is good. I saw Jaws and Alien around the same time when I was a kid(haven't seen them since) and Alien was way more scary, even though it's in a sci-fi setting. I've got Descent on the hard drive of my DVR, but I haven't had the time to watch it yet and I've heard it's supposed to be good(don't spoil it for me).
moi Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 it wasnt a pm between me and him was it? No, of course not. It was the fact that you quoted his whole post before asking if it was any good, that made it look like you were specifically asking him. So my answer is: I hated it ... but because I was absolutely terrified! So maybe that makes it good!
The Moos Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 The Orphanage is good and if you liked that you should check out "The Devils Backbone". Perhaps not as scary, but still really good. If I were to make a last of the best horror movies then I can atleast say for sure that very few, if any, modern movies will be on it. Modern ones are usually crap. The only modern ones that I thought was good enough is perhaps Rec, Martyrs and À l'intérieur. Pontypool was quite alright as well, though mostly half of it. Best horror movies. That is kinda hard. Top 5 would perhaps look like this: 1. Alien 2. Jaws 3. The Silence of the Lambs 4. The Shining 5. The Thing Haven't seen "The Exorcist" yet. "The Omen" was quite good as well, atleast the first one. And honorary mentions to "The Others" and of course the movie with one of the most epic scenes every - "Psycho".
Maksimov Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 (edited) check out "The Devils Backbone". Perhaps not as scary, but still really good. I don't think it was very scary, but the I liked the slightly spooky mood of it. Edited March 24, 2010 by Maksimov
german-blue Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 "Let the right one in" its brilliant....not very scary though
ThunderDan Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 To robx1970, yes The Shining is a great movie to see - and the Stephen King book, as well. The Omen almost cracked my top 5. The nanny hanging scene was certainly on of the scariest jolts ever, for me. Alien had that frightful claustrophobic mood all the way through. The Thing (remake by John Carpenter) was one of the sickest films visually, very graphic and excellent. All very scary. I'll add another to the mix: Nightmare on Elm Street - Freddy literally gave me a nightmare!
Chippy Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 The Exorcist was easily the most scarey when I was a kid, I rarely jump at anything in films but the bit in the Ring where the girl comes out of the well and out the TV screen made me jump also lately I watched Drag me to Hell...Mrs Ganesh scared the be Jesus out of me.
Mod Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 That was ok until it got a little weird bringing the goat in. I gave up with it then.
Chippy Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 That was ok until it got a little weird bringing the goat in. I gave up with it then. Mate you missed the best bit, first they put it in red lipstick, then they got the Butter out the fridge and ...oh hold on that was all in my head wasn't it?
Mod Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 With that film, it wouldn't surprise me! It started well and got very strange.
Chippy Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 With that film, it wouldn't surprise me! It started well and got very strange. It did get better again after that, the end was pretty good to be honest.
Ruh Buh Juh Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 I'm a not very experienced horror viewer...I'm ashamed to admit that I've never seen the original Alien saga, only the abysmal Alien vs. Predator double... Jaws is a cracking horror film. The Mist is immense, though it's not the scariest. 30 Days of Night is amazing. On a side note: I hate all the Saw's, other than the first one. They're an embarrassment to the horror genre. Actually, I hate all the films that fall into the "Torture Porn" category. Hostel. The Hills Have Eyes. Uch.
ThunderDan Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 The Exorcist was easily the most scarey when I was a kid, Easily half the folks in the theater didn't stay til the end. At least all three of us at Texas CM stuck it out to the end. That's why The Exorcist is #1 for me. At the risk of being repetitive, it's also the scariest book I've read. Might have actually damaged me a little...

Actually, I hate all the films that fall into the "Torture Porn" category. Hostel. The Hills Have Eyes. Uch. Alien vs Predator can't compare to either the Alien saga nor the Predator movies. They are miles better than the awful Alien vs Predator. The Mist was really good. Only downside was the less than great special effects. The tentacles were laughable. Still, it was great. As for "torture porn" I have to agree. I've watched Hostel, the Saw-movies and they are quite frankly crap. I even tried to watch Hostel 2 in the hopes that it would be better. If possible it was even worse than the first one. Saw 1 was good though. Original, interesting and not entirely based on torturing and bloody deaths. The rest have ranged from bad to worse though.
Ruh Buh Juh Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 The Mist was really good. Only downside was the less than great special effects. The tentacles were laughable. Still, it was great. Agreed, if only the effects were up to scratch. But still, you can't help but feel absolutely gutted for him at the end.

Maksimov Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 I'm not a fan of torture porn either. Just don't see what the attraction is in those films. As for the Alien saga, RBJ I suggest you watch the first two movies. The third one is still a pretty decent effort, but it really should have ended after that. The fourth one is just a huge mess and I'm shocked that Jean-Pierre Jeunet took the directing job because the story is simply awful.

After my exams in the summer, I'm going to go all out in enhancing my film knowledge. Alien is a must. The Exorcist is a must. The Shining is a must.
mad_mac Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 The Omen was myfavourite growing up, and it still is. THe rope scene, and the photograph development scene are great. And who doesn't love a good decapitation?
Uncloaked Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 The Hills Have Eyes was the most gruesome film I have watched. Both the Hostel films come close too.
