Bobby Z for SA?

Featured Replies

no, not some kind of code to ask Loz to finally get the beers in, but does anyone else feel Bobby Zamora has played his way into the England world cup squad? at most world cups theres a bolter, someone no-one expected to go or be involved but ends up having a massive impact. after watching him last night in europe i think he could be worth taking.

i agree about him being a better option than heskey but neither should go. he's had a good season but there is a reason to watch your head when sitting in row z. i'm not english but i will be supporting england and i'd rank the strikers as follows:

rooney

bent

crouch

agbonlahor

defoe

zamora

all other english strikers in premiership

all english strikers in championship

nugent

all english strikers in league one, two and blue square premier

franny jeffers

heskey

It's a tricky one but if there is a place up for grabs he's certainly in with a shout.

He seems to have been around for ages. I remember when he was at Brighton and had a great record which I guess is why Sp*rs took a punt on him, but he struggled to establish himself in the top flight and he always looked like one of those players who would never make the step up and their level was Championship football or lower.

But I have to say, watching him recently and last night he is playing really well. Quality turn and finish for his goal last night. Still debateable whether he's International quality but then that can be said of many over the years - Steve Bull, Luther Blisset and more recently Heskey and Bent.

Not sure how many actual strikers we'll be taking. Rooney is nailed on even if he's got a broken leg as is Crouch (for the squad). Probably Defoe and I guess that leaves one other?

He's well worth a look for Capello and has played well this season, as has Bent. He's the only player near Drogs and rooney in the goal scoring charts, that's got to say something - and he plays for Sunderland!

I'd put him in there with Rooney, Bent and Crouch, with Defoe as back up.

Then again, I support Australia, and we basically have no strikers since Viduka retired.

I think he should go to the World Cup, but I don't know what formation England will play in. If they go 4-4-2, then Rooney and Defoe should partner IMO, but if they go 4-3-3, then it'll be Rooney with 2 wingers either side, so whoever goes will be an understudy to Rooney. I think Capello should take 5: Rooney, Defoe, Crouch, Bent, Zamora. But that'll be the order of choice I think, so even if Zamora gets in the squad, he won't get much chance of actually playing...

Josh Kennedy?..................................

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!

It's funny how you guys use the definition "international class". Reality is pretty much all of those players listed would be nailed on starters for most of the teams at the world cup (including my side Australia).

In the end, it really comes down to who is going to complement the side the best, not whose the biggest name.

Bobby Zamora might have come to the spotlight a couple of months too late. Heskey has been an integral part of Capello's plans ever since he took over and the latter is not going to disturb a settled line up due to media pressure. (Too bad he wasn't thinking on the same lines when he sacked JT)

I dont think Rooney needs a strike partner anyway looking at the way he's played alone upfront this season. If Capello wants to exploit the full potential of Rooney, he must employ him the way he's employed in ManUtd in a 4-3-3 formation with Joe Cole on the right and Johnson on the left.

Josh Kennedy?..................................

The moment, 'Jesus' starts walking on water is the time I start taking him seriously as something other than an air target.

Scott McDonald would be dandy......if he could score. He would need to play with a big striker.

Unfortunately, it will probably fall to Kewell, but he's better than the other options up front.

it's too far down the line IMO.

rooney under cap plays his best football with heskey, and if something happens to rooney you have a decent partnership in crouch and defoe.

I think those four will rightfully go (as much as I don't really like defoe or heskey as footballers). rooney has shown he is capable of playing up front alone to excellent effect this season, he's really added that to his game. annoyingly it is too late for capello to change the formation and pattern of play to adapt to this, but going towards euro 2012 I think he will look at it as an option.

should zamora keep up his form then he deserves a look, but that will probably be after the world cup.

I quite like knowing what our team will look like, and more importantly that the players actually have formed a functional side. compare capello's work to maradona's in the past couple years. one has built a side capable of putting in a decent challenge (for what is after all a cup competition), the other has tried 120 players, and has to rely on individual genius to carry his side (as domenech did four years ago).
