Lifelong Chelsea fan appointed chairman of Liverpool

Featured Replies

I'm not sure of the best place for this thread...

In financial trouble and having missed an Easter deadline for securing new investment, it looks like the banks stepped in and have forced one of our own to be appointed as their chairman.

With half a century of racegoing and horse ownership behind him, Martin Broughton, former chairman of the British Horseracing Authority, might be expected to feel more at home on the turf than on a football pitch. But the new chairman of Liverpool FC just enjoys being at the heart of the action.

Mr Broughton is expected to be formally appointed this week after Barclays Capital was hired to sell the financially troubled Premiership club.

The Chelsea season-ticket holder will be dealing with Liverpool’s warring owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, and its disgruntled manager, Rafael Benítez, but the heat of battle is nothing new to him. As chairman of British Airways, the conflict-torn carrier, since 2004, he is the favoured negotiator of Tony Woodley, the Unite union’s joint general secretary, who describes him as “more sensible†than Willie Walsh, BA’s chief executive .

Broughton ... is a lifelong Chelsea fan.

It is all part of Roman's cunning master plan. Just image the possibilities...

Lifelong Chelsea fan? B*ll*cks he is. He has no need for money, probably not exactly short of job offers if he went looking and yet he takes on the role of Liverpool chairman.

He is just someone with a season ticket holder at Chelsea because he is loaded and it makes no impact on his wallet.

You cynical old git - youll be telling me he doesnt have Bovril and a pie at HT next

Liverpool/Barclays want him to access his network and find a buyer, Barclays have bailed them out sadly
