Pompey supporters

Featured Replies

Travelling from South London, as we hit Waterloo our carriage filled up with Pompey supporters all asking 'How many you going to get today lad's' when they saw the colours. It's not as though there is the rivalry with Portsmouth as there is against the likes of Arsenal or Man Utd who we've previously and recently met at Wembley. Although, I know years ago there was quite a bit of aggravation down on the South coast and there are many older supporters who have probably had a run-in with them.

Saturday was different though. There few a few conversations exchanged on the tube, a bit of banter on Wembley way until we were segregated into our own ends. Now I know the papers have given all the tributes to their supporters already, one even claiming they'd won the cup for their support alone (yeah - work that one out), but I just thought their fans deserved a bit of acknowledgement for their loyal, yet gracious support. They didn't deserve to have Peter Storey and Harry 'the wheeler-dealer' Redknapp in trusting positions at their club, or a merry-go-round of chairman with no idea of how to run a football club.

To see the entire stadium decked out in blue as JT lifter the cup was superb. Most losers are half-way home by the time that happens, (I even saw some Chelsea supporters leaving before JT lifted it - HONESTLY - I couldn't believe my eyes!!)) Even after sinking a few beers and letting Wembley way clear, there were still Pompey supporters milling around, several asking the best place to go for a drink, and a few asking if they could come with us to join in our celebrations. Although very deflated after the result, they supported their club to the hilt, and for their supporters alone I hope they come straight back up, and don't end up like Leeds, who I thoroughly enjoyed singing 'we'll never play you again' to.

Hard Luck Pompey, but congratulations on your terrific support, you don't deserve what has happended to your club!

*Remeber before Roman arrived, it might easily have been us*

This is the period when the real fans are tested.

It has to be in your blood....Pompeye fans definitely know that their club is passing through worst possible period with 135 millions debt.

But when you start supporting a team you should be with it in both good and bad times.

And I appreciate the spirit shown by Pompeye fans.

Even here in India my Friends (Most of them being Manure fans) used to tease me for last few years that I support loser's team..But I used to tell them let it be,everyone is ready to support a team when its on high and winning trophies, but real fans are tested in crisis hours ..so I stuck with Chelsea (would be so forever) and now I have the final lough :).

P.S.:- A Gunner fan still tried to bug me commenting today on my FB status "somehow you won trophy this year but your team plays boring football" and I replied back saying

Messi vs Arsenal

4 = 0

and It worked wonders for me as he is quite since then ::ChELSeAFaN::

Totally Agree Bluenut.

To be honest, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Pompey 'cos my nan & grandad lived about 2 miles from their ground in Fratton when I was about 10.

But their fans (or the ones I've come across anyway) are a really decent bunch. We went for a few beers in the Sports Bar at near Marylebone Station before the final on Saturday and had some good banter with the Pompey fans. All good natured & handshakes with not a hint of trouble.

Hope Pompey can turn things around as those fans don't deserve the sh*t they have had to put up with this season.

I was at the Globe at midday and it was (as always) utterley rammed. I left at around 1pm and crossed the road onto Baker Street and it wasnt till then that i realised just how many fans there were there and just how loud it was.

The Pompey fans seemed genuinley taken aback by it, some even intimidated but there was no sense of malice or trouble at all.

I took a pic of the Globe (its a bit crap, sh*tty iphone camera) it doesnt really do justice the the number of Chelsea fans there was there though.

Nibs, i was in the sports bar too (albeit very briefly) at one point a regular stop of mine coming down from Warwickshire to Marylebone.

It's a bit of a long story how I got my tickets and a bit freaky I hasten to add.

Anyway, my fiance' , son and daughter were in the end facing the royal box, bang on halfway line, our tickets were £85 each and supplied to the Portsmouth FA, in my hand on the Friday!

All ends were given flags, blue for pompey and chequered blue and white for us, our seats as we took our place had half Chelsea half pompey flags.

Now let me say first, the majority of the pompey fans were ok, their massed ranks behind their goal fantastic throughout, even if their songs were a tad too repetitive, completely outsang Chelsea, saying that anyone could have on the day, too many prawnies and I guess double nerves the explanation.

Now it didn't take a rocket scientist to work out FA tickets could end up in Chelsea fans hands, wherever they were issued, every affliliated club in the FA get tickets, the mixed flags didn't show that logic to some pompey fans though.

Everything was fine, good natured banter, that until they missed their penalty and we scored a few minutes later.

What followed was a disgrace to Portsmouth football club and inept Wembley stewards and policing.

We were threatened, although my son and I can both handle ourselves, we restrained ourselves and tried to support our team to the end.

Could the pompey fans behave, not a chance, one bald headed monster who wanted to rip my head off, his words, was even a West Ham fan saying we should not be in the pompey end, they just couldn't get it into their heads they were FA tickets. This guy was a clear Chelsea hater.

My daughter and fiance' were frightened out of their lives, to be honest it was a blessing Lamps missed the last minute penalty.

We were spat on at the final whistle, still we didn't react, thank god we never had a beer before hand that's all I can say.

A young girl with a lampard shirt on was pelted with coins an utter disgrace, the stewards and police did f all.

After the game there were a lot of pompey fans coming up to congratulate us, as we clapped pompey players going up for their medals I hasted to add.

About 200 Chelsea were left scattered all over, as the players celebrated after lifting the cup.

What amazed me as we left and came out of the toilet a fat woman in pompey colours shouted abuse at us, swearing away, I just laughed !

So that's my pompey story !

Thats terrible to hear , that behaviour should not be tolerated by officials. Looks like they have a few bad eggs amongst them.

of course they do, as does almost every club. let's not kid ourselves. portsmouth fans in general may be more old-fashioned than most, but they are certainly no angels. you only had to hear the boos from the portsmouth end every time JT touched the ball to realise that.

Exactly. Fan's in Star's position could have, and probably would have suffered the same abuse no matter which side we were playing. And it's not hard to imagine Chelsea fans behaving the same way with opposition fans in our end. It's what happens.
