Should Chelsea introduce a transfer fee cap?.

Featured Replies

Just wondering if it's time Chelsea let it be known to all agents in world football, that they intend to cap their transfer fees?.

Yet again, with the Hulk saga,it seams another possible transfer will drag on for who knows how long, with the transfer fee seaming to be the major stumbling block.

I don't think we can even 'officially' start the chat about a singing-on fee, images rights, wages etc with the player/his agent, which will drag it out even longer!.All these issues just further the delay in getting the new guy intergrated with his new teammates.

Plus of course, there is a possible side effect of such a huge fee putting way to much pressure of the shoulders of the new chap.Just at a time when a new player needs that grief least. You know how the press vutures like to stick the boot in to a struggling player with a mega fee behind him.

I wonder if the size of the fee involved,(a British record), caused a few issues with Torres & sometimes wonder if he would have settled quicker if the cash for him was £30 mill only!.

Regarding a player such as Hulk, there can only be a very few clubs in world football who can afford much more than £25-30 million cash, paid straight up,so why is there such a delay thesedays?.

Maybe if Chels let it be known that the most we pay in transfer fees will never exceed £35-40 millon say, perhaps, it will help us in future negotiations, plus take just a small bit of extra pressure off the shoulder's of the new guy?.

No, because then we'd be Arsenal

(I do agree with the vast majority of your post btw, we need to keep wages down not only for financial reasons, but also due not case unrest in the dressing room or put additional pressure onto players to perform, but a flat cap wouldn't help IMO, every single player needs to be paid according to their own merits and what they offer the team)

NO

the fair play system is in essence capping how much we spend anyway, the fact we have gained so much from prize money, tv coverage and more fans from asian etc means we have some breathing space to spend big for the first time in a long this season, something no one seems to recognise , i would love to Hulk to join. Torres, Hulk, Mata,Ramires, Hazard, Sturridge, Lampard, Meireles, Marin, Lukakau etc all in tandem is one hell of an exciting line up

Do you mean a wage cap? That's a bit more manageable.

Ya I'd agree with that, a salary cap would be more fair to me than would transfer fee's. I think the problem with financial fair play is that it widens the gap between the big and the small teams in the small teams are never allowed to grow since you need to achieve massive success in order to spend and replenish. I think its great for us that we were able to pull this off, but FFP is a really stupid way of trying whatever the hell it is really trying to do.

If we introduce a transfer cap we can more or less forget about signing any big names in the future. We'll have to take gambles on less known ones who might or might not turn out good.

Would not mind if there would be a cap for all the leagues in the world. That and wage caps like they have in NHL.

There's just a bit too much money involved in football nowadays.

I dont think a wage cap is needed right now at Chelsea, because wages have been in decline, not rising (for our current squads).

I think it is something the club could now do and have it be successful. Ive lost count of the number of young players out there who have talked about their dream of playing here. Among these are a lot of guys just maturing to stardom. With a european trophy and years of success to back it up, Chelsea are clearly among the elite in terms of visibility and exposure. My point is that the original lure which got Crespo, Mutu, Maka, Drogba, etc to sign here (a large pay packet) isnt always needed to convince a player to join.

By many accounts Hazard is going to be making a little over 100k a week (par for the course wages with stars) and Mata, who only joined last year, is on 60k. Once the last of the JT/Frank generation leave the club we wont need to pay wild money or promise a "project" to all their potential signings. There will be plenty of players who want the lure of a competitive team in london.

Agree. FFP is designed by these elite clubs for the very fact that they dont want to keep up financial competition with the "new elite" of rich clubs that are emerging.

Its cladded in this guise about having the best interests of the game in mind. But if that were the case they would be looking to financially constrain the biggest clubs too.

Is Mata on £60k a week? Haha, that's only £10k more than Benayoun. I guess winning the Champions League probably activates a bonus the likes of which us electricity-bills-as-toilet-paper crowd can't even imagine...
