Whilst waiting for this godforsaken trial verdict to made I was googling a few Chelsea things here and there (as you do) and came across this quote from Hudson:

At Stoke in midweek he looked frustrated and the former Chelsea and Stoke midfielder Alan Hudson, now a columnist in the Potteries, suggested Gullit "again looked disillusioned". Hudson added: "He has gone from shaking his dreadlocks to putting his head down. Unless Chelsea bring in great players like Le Tissier I cannot see him staying with the club."

Now you might say "big deal, he's entitled to his opinion" but look at the date of the article, September 1995 thats barely a month after Gullit had made his debut with us, Jesus Christ it didn't take him long to be a gloom and doom merchant.

So, I googled some more thinking there might be more information to flesh this story out and got another quote of his, this time from just prior to our 1997 FA Cup quarter final with Pompey:

"I think Ruud is a little too laid-back for his own good. His approach appears to be rubbing off on his players, too. Some of the lesser players in the team now think they can all play like Gullit. Dennis Wise now......."

Anyway, the only reason I thought to share this is that it provides incontrivertible evidence that Hudson has always been available (at a price no doubt) for an anti Chelsea, ultra critical soundbite regardless of how successful or unsuccessful we currently are. I wish Chelsea supporters would bear that in mind anytime they think of calling him a Chelsea great or Chelsea legend. He said recently that the club didn't mean anything to him anymore, well fine, but don't kid yourself that he felt any different back in the 90s.

I really hate when ex players are scathing and uneccessarily critical of us in the press, its a huge slap in the face to the fans who paid their wages all those years.

He's a tw*t who rarely has anything good to say about us. When I saw this topic my first thought was that it'd be about him slating us for something or other. He usually resurfaces right before a big Chelsea match to moan about how terrible we are. I wouldn't be surprised if he was supporting Bayern last May, just like he was rooting for United in 94 and Arsenal in 2002.

Hudson can always be relied upon to come up with a negative comment about Chelsea, he's a very bitter man.

What angered me most was his whinging that Chelsea didn't help him out when he was in trouble, years after he left us. No mention of his other clubs, Stoke and Arsenal, not helping him.

He was a wonderful footballer, possibly the best and most skillful English midfielder of his time, but his attitude towards Chelsea since he left means he'll never be a club legend in my opinion.

He needs a bit of leniency i feel..He had a major accident and it has given him some psychological problems aswell..Yes he has coated chelsea off who should , in my opinion, helped him out a little more than they did . He was a fairly good servant for us and some of us have great memories of him..He attacked chelsea more than stoke or arsenal because he loved us the most..The CHELSEA MEANS NOTHING statement is similar to when a girlfreind dumps one of us..We hurt inside but can claim."WHO CARES" as a front. He is a player who should have been given a good job at the Bridge..

Why? And why not, say, at Stoke or Arsenal? We've had dozens of far more dedicated servants of our club who have never said a bad word against us. We can't employ them all.

I feel sorry for Hudson, who's had a seriously tough time since his accident, but he never had a good word about us way before that.

You asked why..The only way i can answer that is to say that from a personal point of view i care more about some people than i do about others.I feel sympathy and empathy to some who have gone through sh*t, and whether right or wrong base stuff not on just the black and white of the subject, but the always greater grey area..I maybe wrong but these are my thoughts that im sure very few will agree with. (and) i believe CFC COULD emloy all past servants in some capacity that need help

Hudson wasn't exactly over the moon at the way he was treated by Geoff Hurst either. But for that I can't blame him at all.

In fact when it comes to Geoff Hurst, I'm with him all the way. I couldnae stand the man. It's debatable whether or not he was Chelsea's worst ever manager, but when it comes to most disliked, and most dislikeable, he has few if any contenders.

What's the story with Hudson and Hurst?

What's the story with Hudson and Hurst?

If I remember correctly, Hudson was all set to rejoin Chelsea under Danny Blanchflower but was unable to complete the transfer due to Blanchflower's ill health. In a nutshell, Hurst tore up the contract, and it was another two years before Hudson returned to the Bridge, during which time (again if memory serves me well) he was unable to play at all as a result of illness and injuries.
