Former Rangers player Ian Redford found dead at just 53

Featured Replies

Former Rangers player Ian Redford was found dead yesterday near his home. He was only 53.

The clubs record signing in Feb 1980 for £210,000 from Dundee. (85 apps and 34 goals).

His finest moment at Rangers was when he  scored the winner in the 1981 League Cup Final v Dundee Utd in Nov 81.This goalwas scored in the last few minutes after he'd come on as a sub.

In May 81 he'd missed a last minute penalty v Dundee Utd in the Scottish Cup Final. The game ended 0-0 and Rangers won 4-1 in the replay.

He played 171 games for Rangers and scored 23 goals mainly from the left side of midfield..

In 1985 he moved to Dundee Utd and played well for them and he reached the 1987 UEFA Cup Final where he got a  runners up medal. He played 101 times, scoring 20 goals for Dundee United.

A very sad loss. RIP

As you would expect from the Ibrox crowd, yesterday's minute silence was impeccably observed,

Ian Redford was a very good player who never quite made it to the next, i.e. full international level. By all accounts, he was a really nice guy, and will be sadly missed.

RIP
