Hoeness trial: Bayern Munich boss jailed

 

A German court has sentenced the president of European football champions Bayern Munich to three years and six months in jail for tax evasion.

Uli Hoeness admitted defrauding German tax authorities of millions of euros.

The former World Cup-winning German international footballer had kept the funds in a secret Swiss bank account.

His lawyer had argued he should escape punishment because he gave himself up. But judges ruled his confession fell short of full disclosure.

Good question. I'd say Messi is maybe a little bit more important in terms of marketing value. He also plays for Barca, and I don't think the Spanish judges would like the flak that would come from jailing a superstar playing for something that is more than a club (cringe).

Messi and his father also made a "voluntary" payment of tax of around €3m I think it was before any investigation began.
