Youth integration. Do we need it for the future identity of the club?

Featured Replies

We have a fantastically successful youth system and a handful of talented young players out on loan. Is it time we started focusing more on them for the future of the club? We seem intent on going out and buying foreign players who are average/above average for £30-40m, but often continue to neglect what we have in our youth set up and abroad on loan.

I would like to see at least 3 young players integrated for next season and my choice would be:

Mason Mount

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Ampadu

Hudson-Odoi

Three English players, brought through our youth system, and a young Welsh talent bought in. We could sell maybe Drinkwater, Barkley, Pedro and maybe even Willian if the right amount of money were offered then invest in other areas of the squad which are in need of reinforcement.

Thoughts?

I agree we have a number of promising young players though would settle for one per season. More would be a bonus yet by having at least one you give the other youngsters hope they can make it.

Hopefully some of them will actually get an extended chance ... every time a young player does something decent or semi-decent in the first team they seem to get dropped or loaned out almost immediately. This seaon's obvious examples : Musonda had that delightful assist against Brighton and then next breath he's gone to Celtic. CHO had that lovely little cameo and then hasn't been seen since .... and pre-injury, Ampadu got way fewer chances than he deserved given that he looked class every time he was on the pitch ... most odd way to develop talent ...

I think Conte would agree. Spend big on a few great players and let academy/ young players fill in.

I think we could get by with a RW, RWB, and CM signing and the youngsters fill in for depth. Pedro and Cesc can go, that gets some money in and lifts two large wages off the books.
