FIFA are apparently trying to replace the current yearly CWC with a new 24 team CWC to be held every 4 years in which you're guaranteed to make at least 50m and the winner makes 100m. This would mean the current CWC would cease to exist and the Confedarations cup would go as well. Seems like they want to start out by inviting teams who've won the CL at least 3 times (so Barca, Madrid, Bayern, United, Liverpool, Milan, etc) - 12 of them. Plus 3 of Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City, PSG, Dortmund, Atletico, Porto & Benfica. The rest of the slots will be filled with none European clubs.

First edition could be as soon as 2021 with China likely to be the first hosts.

Any thoughts on this? Looks like it would have to be aimed for the year between the Euros and the World Cup.

Personally, I'm fully in support of this. But UEFA and the Premier League are fighting against it apparently.

They are trying to create a more prestigious version of the CL of course UEFA are against it.

All the teams participating should already be in UEFA competitions so when the rare once in 4 years CWC comes round, adding more fixtures to an already demanding calendar, teams will likely sacrifice the competitions they can compete in every year. ie. the CL and the League.

It depends on when the competition is played though, I'm assuming it's not during the winter as it is now. But for sure it's a competing product that the big brands don't want to happen.

I think cup competitions like the FA Cup and Copa Del Rey and co will suffer the most. Unless they make it a summer tournament in the years between the Euros and the WC.

Bizarre that the entry is 3 champs league or more, does that mean clubs like Nottingham Forest are allowed to come and we are not?  haha...

Surely one European cup and a top 2/3 finish in your domestic league should allow you in.

No because Forest only won 2 European Cups not 3.

not sure I see the point of this really. also can't see how a 24 team tournament can be fitted into schedules unless it replaces or is an element of pre-season tours, a bit like the way UEFA are turning international friendlies into mini leagues and tournaments

It's about time this happened. A chance to be called world champions shouldn't be sniffed at.

However i would have done it another way, the 4 CL winners in between the tournaments and if someone wins it more than once the best perforing team that didn't win (which would have been us between 05-09 for example with Barca winning twice in that period). Same for all other continents.
