Pretty harsh to exclude Villa and Robben from the list.

Other less high profile players that I would consider are Asamoah Gyan and Alexis Sanchez.

Xavi needs to in the in the list. It's easy to take his contribution for granted but he's been fantastic.

I considered Robben for my top six but did not include him as he did not participate in all the matches. No doubt he helped to take the Dutch to the Final. He would have been in my top ten.

As for Villa I chose the 20 year old Mueller instead. However, I expect Villa to produce in the Final  and possibly win the golden boot. I hope he does as I've wagered on Spain to win the Cup.

It was a toss up between Xavi and Iniesta. There was little to choose between them but I gave it to Iniesta . He has benn playing brilliantly in the last few games.

He has but they just showed the stat that Xavi has created 25 scoring chances in the tournament which is 8 more than anyone else. No one says you can't have both in the list

In no particular order...

Xavi, Sneijder, Forlan, Maicon, Mueller, Villa

A close seventh is Schweinsteiger

I'd go with:

1. Schweinsteiger - Amazing so far. Best player of the tournament.
2. Forlan - Been great and has carried his team all the way.
3. Sneijder - Five goals from a midfielder is impressive. Has been the reason why Oranje is playing tonight in the final.
4. Mueller - I'm so impressed by him. The lad doesn't have great technique, nor great speed. He just works so hard and his reward is being top of both "most goals scored" and "most points".
5. Lahm - Probably the best defender in this World Cup. Good captain as well.
6. Özil - When he's been great - Germany has been great. Really impressive. Has really raised his pricetag.

Close: Villa, Honda, Maicon, Xavi, Iniesta, Robben, Kingson, Klose.

Mueller has had a sucessful world cup, especially for a 20 year old, but, though I can't remember all of his goals, I don't remember any of them being anything special. Sure the fact that he is tied for the scoring lead is a big deal especially considering his age, but the goals I remember him scoring were an easy rebound yesterday, a couple of easy ones against England, and the slightest brush of his hair on the ball against Argentina.

Does anyone have any idea how Messi is up for player of the tournament? Other than him being Messi of course.

He was great for Argentina, just unlucky not to score. If I recall correctly, he was Man of the Match more often than he wasn't. At least according to the stats on Sky Sports.

Great is pushing it surely, all I can remember is him running up dead ends constantly and hardly creating anything.

except in The Sun, which has Steven Gerrard as player of the tournament, followed at some distance by any 9 others.

I would scratch Messi and Ozil immediately. Ozil has been excellent in a few games, but also almost invisible in others. Messi played well, but certainly not good enough to be considered the best.

Villa scored lots of goals and was the reason for Spain going to the final, but I still don't think he's been excellent in any way.
Maicon's been great, but in my oppinion outshone by Lahm.

For me the top three must be Forlan, Schweinsteiger and possibly Lahm or Xavi/Iniesta.

Messi played very well this tournament. It's easy to bash him for not dominating but he was Argentina's best player and got a real lot of attention from opposing defenses. Not to make excuses for him but I don't think he was 100% against Germany either, if you remember he was I'll the day before.

As for Inestia/Xavi, I guess I was wrong because Inestia did it when it counted.
