We all know Frank has been receiving some pretty unfair criticism (relative to the other England players). I can't deny he has not be setting the world alight with his recent performances, for club or country, but if people can't see the good in what they have available to them, then all the better for us. I got an odd request from Kanal Lokal Sweden for some photos from the second leg of the Cup Winner's Cup tie between Atvidaberg and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 1971. The match ended in a 1-1 draw and we were knocked out on away goals after having clobbered Kaerjeng 21-0 on aggregate in the first round (8-0 and 13-0)! For anyone interested, Glascow Rangers won it that year, beating Dinamo Moskva 3-2 in the final (after beating Bayern in the semi's). But back to the issue at hand, anyone able to help out? Herniated disk in my lower back - pretty much put paid to my footballing career, LOL. It was an inocuous challenge; pushed from behind, fell forwards, stretched out my left leg to break the fall and felt something go in my lower back. Had trouble getting home that day and was pretty much bed-ridden for almost a month. Required physical therapy and heat therapy for another month before I got back to some semblance of normalcy. A few months later, I was on the pitch, but this time I was having real problems with my hamstring and my Achilles'. Basically, the back injury was causing all sorts of problems. After a couple of hours of football, despite extensive stretching beforehand, I would hardly be able to walk, such was the pain in the two Achilles'. But nothing was keeping me away from football. And then I started my current job, and that avenue of pleasure was closed - for good. I'm feeling cheerful already Cheers, Butch

Dear Friends, I guess we just come up with these competitions and name them depending on how many matches are left in the EPL before we realize we haven't started the competition yet. If you remember it used to be called the Last-11 (which had a nice ring about it). Anyway, Last-8 is what it will need to be this season! For those of you who don't know what the competition is or how to join, it is very simply. Chelsea currently have 8 EPL games left in the season. You have to predict, BEFORE Chelsea's next EPL game against Watford, ALL EIGHT RESULTS. NOTE to BPL predictors, all we need is the final score (no starters, subs, scorers, etc...). If you get the correct score, you get 3 points (~ a win). If you get the correct result, but the wrong score, you get 1 point (~ a draw). If you get both the score and result wrong, you get 0 points (~ a loss). For each win, you get double the goal difference for the match (e.g. 4 points if it ended 3-1, or 4-2, or 5-3, etc...). For each draw, you get the goal difference for the match (e.g. 2 points if it ended 3-1). For the loss, you get subtracted 1 from your goal difference. I haven't time at the moment to post the 8 remaining matches. Kudos to anyone who does this for us. If not, I will later in the day. Right, nine games to go... A lot of Chelsea fans are getting desperate - some still feel we have a chance, some feel we're clutching at straws and some have completely lost faith. But whichever category you may fall into, this is what has to happen in the remaining nine games for Chelsea to clinch a third league title on the trot. Let's first concentrate on Man Utd: Out of nine matches, at a minimum they must lose one and draw two. This is because Chelsea are 6 points behind with a much inferior goal difference. So, Chelsea must make up 7 points on Man Utd, equating to 3 wins (9 points) while Man Utd pick up no more than 2 draws (2 points) in any 3 game span, provided they make the same number of points in the remaining 6 matches. For a side that have kept on winning matches they haven't deserved to, I think we can all see that 2 draws and a defeat in their remaining 9 matches is just about still in the realm of possibility. But for this to be enough for Chelsea to catch up, we'd have to win all 9 of our remaining matches. The question then becomes, "is THAT a reasonable expectation". If it isn't, and we drop anymore points, Man Utd would ALSO have to drop those extra same number of points, in addition to the 2 draws and 1 defeat. A key match will be that game at Stamford Bridge between the two sides. A Man Utd defeat in any other match is looking less and less likely, so it will be up to Chelsea to beat them at the Bridge. If we can do that, the possibility that we can overhaul them is that much higher. If we don't, then of course it will be quite unlikely (though not impossible) that this will happen. I haven't had a chance to compare the remaining 9 matches, in terms of opponents, so if anyone would like to do that as a response to this post, that would be most welcome. This coming weekend is, I feel, one where all Chelsea fans can have some hope of clawing back some points. Man Utd have to play Bolton, while Chelsea play Sheff Utd. If they can get through this weekend unscathed (same 6 points or more ahead), then their odds will be looking even better. But, if they slip up, as is entirely possible, then Chelsea will have to make sure they capitalize. Keep the faith! Cheers, Butch

That is the way that Carvalho plays - he anticipates and makes a decision to "nip things in the bud". Of course, he does miss from time to time and they tend to be pretty glaring errors (when it works he looks good, when it doesn't...well, you know). Alongside an experienced centerback like JT, Carvalho is pretty well covered. Alongside a midfield-come-centerback like Essien, I think Carvalho does need to change his tactics a little. Of all the teams left in the tournament, I feel we should keep an eye out for Milan (class) and Liverpool (passion). Those two could give us different kinds of problems if we played them. The rest? Provided we played the way we can, we more than match them. As a matter of fact, we'd be favorites. Why? PSV - Good team, but apart from Alex, and maybe Farfan, can you name any of their players? Would Alex even be allowed to play? Man Utd - In recent history, everytime we've played them we've outplayed them. Sure, results have not always gone our way but I'd fancy our chances over them quite a bit. Bayern - True enough, should never count the Germans out, but they are not the team they were. May be a good time to play them before their come-back manager instills anymore confidence into them. Valencia - Talented team, and I was tempted to group them with Liverpool and Milan as the teams to watch out for, but the approach they took at home against Inter has given me a slightly different opinion of them. Roma - Surprise of the round, me thinks, when they beat Lyon. But I still think of only one player when I hear the name Roma. Cheers, Butch
