Ramon Calderon has resigned as president of Spanish champions Real Madrid after an emergency board meeting at the Bernabeu.

Calderon, who was elected to the post in 2006, confirmed earlier reports of his resignation in a press conference at the Bernabeu.

"Against the recommendations of my board I have decided to step down from the presidency," Calderon said.

"I have committed errors but not irregularities. I go with my head held high."

The 57-year-old lawyer will be replaced by Vicente Boluda, who takes charge until a new presidential election can be held in the close season.

Calderon, who has held the post since 2006, has been under pressure to go since Marca newspaper published allegations earlier this week of irregularities at the club's general assembly last month.

The allegations said unauthorised persons had gained access to the club's assembly on December 7 and their presence had helped swing votes on key issues in favour of the management.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Calderon said two Real officials involved in organising the assembly had resigned and he would probably not stand for re-election when his four-year mandate ended in 2010.

He ruled out stepping down immediately and insisted neither he nor any other member of the management board were involved in any irregularities.

The least surprising thing about this story us that Calderon is corrupt - the most surprising thing is that he has been busted by Marca, a newspaper commonly knows as being only an inch away from being Real Madrid's official fanzine.

that was what shocked me, so there must be something to it.

I think Peter Kenyon just got tired of commuting to Madrid every now and then and wearing that stupid mask with "Calderon"'s face, so he decided to bring hell to only one club at a time. :D

I think i speak for many people here, as well as Peter Kenyon, when I say this couldnt have happened to a more deserving c**t. I hope this arsehole goes on trial and gets ruined like Moggi

You thought Madrid had learned their lesson after Florentino Perez, but he was just obstenate. Calderon was just a piece of utter garbage. One rule for his club, another for the rest of t he world.

I wonder how stupid the electors now feel having put him in power. "I want to bring Kaka, Ronaldo and Fabregas to Madrid". Lets hope Gago, van der Vaart and Lassandra Diarra will do for them then. It always amazes me how the politics of this club are even a farce when compared to actual, real world politics. The same liars and criminals rule the roost.

Now that he is gone, maybe we can hit them up for Saviola. Apparrently Ramos has told him he can find a new club. We could do far worse than him, and pay far more.
