The Guardian's European goal of the season

Featured Replies

Of course there's no Chelsea goals, surprise surprise. ::gEeZer::

The winner was Grafite for Wolfsburg v Bayern which I must admit was a bit special to say the least.

The contenders:

1) Yoann Gourcuff (BORDEAUX v Paris St Germain, Ligue 1)

2) Simon Cox (SWINDON TOWN v Walsall, League One)

3) Grafite (WOLFSBURG v Bayern Munich, Bundesliga)

4) Fernando Torres (LIVERPOOL v Blackburn, Premier League)

5) Achille Emana (BETIS v Sporting, La Liga)

6) Remi Mareval (NANTES v Marseille, Ligue 1)

7) Cristiano Ronaldo (Porto v MAN UTD, Champions League)

8) Moussa Dembélé (Willem II v AZ ALKMAAR, Eredivisie)

9) Eduardo (ARSENAL v Burnley, FA Cup)

10) Zlatan Ibrahimovic (INTER v Bologna, Serie A)

11) Geovanni (Arsenal v HULL, Premier League)

12) Giuseppe Mascara (Palermo v CATANIA, Serie A)

I don't care what they reckon, the best goal I have seen all season was Essien's against Barcelona. The skill and technique required to hit that ball on the volley the way he did is something special. And it was his left foot!

It beats the swirling toe poke at #7.

I'm in total agreement, the thing is that goal will probably end up getting forgotten by all non-Chelsea fans due to what happened afterwards, which is a real shame. Remember when Rooney scored a similar (not as good) goal against Newcastle the media raved about it for ages.

Also don't forget Franks chip against Hull which was a fantastic goal and well worthy of a place in that list.

my god how essiens goal against barca not in it i dont know. was onme of the best goals the last couple of years and it was against the now european champs. i hate talking like this but as each year goes on it just proves that we are hated im sorry but essiens goal could have maybe should have won it. if that was gerrard he would have won it. like i said i hated thinking like this but what do we have 2 do to get some credit.

I didn't like Grafite's goal. I mean it was good skill, but it was just unlucky on the Bayern defence that the backheel just crawled through. Gourcuff's is better IMO.

He showed some great ball control, but I thought it was pretty arrogant to try something like that as there were a few defenders between him and the goal. The backheel was pathetic and it would have looked very embarrassing if the defender had got his foot in the way(it took a slight deflection from the defender, didn't it?). Ok, it was late on in the game and Wolfsburg were in a comfortable lead, but still he was pretty close to wasting all that fancy footwork that got him into the position to try that backheel.

Just watched Essien's goal again. The technique, accuracy, power all amazing. Plus the speed of thought to react to the initial deflection and a defender was right in front of him. An absolutely stunning strike.

It is the Goal of The Season without any shadow of a doubt.

Some nice goals there, but there are quite a few who I would say isn't near Essiens goal against Barcelona. I've seen that goal atleast 20 times and I could watch it 20 times in a row right now and still not grow tired of it. It's simply brilliant.

Maybe all the s*it that went down in that game overshadowed his goal. If we would have won it and gotten the penalties (beating Barca 3-0 or 4-0) the goal from Essien would've been so much sweeter :D

Jesus, watching that again is actually painful. The fact that its been relegated to an afterthought because of what happened that night.

Im trying to be as unbiased as possible here, but having watched several of those I hadnt already seen, the fact that Eduardo's is there, and Essien's isnt is absolutely criminal. Ess was twice as far from goal, and struck a harder volley on a ball that was not moving forward. I think the emotion of Eduardo's comeback season has gotten that one in there
