Chelsea prepare deadline day swoop for Liverpool target Dimitri Payet

Chelsea last night made a move for one-time Liverpool target Dimitri Payet of St Etienne.

As talks rumbled on over Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, the Premier League champions asked about the 23-year-old France international midfielder who can play on the wing or behind the striker.

He was earmarked by Liverpool’s Damien Comolli as a possible target for their problem wide left position but a deal was shelved as they pursued other targets.

Yet now, after Paris St Germain lined up Payet to replace Sunderland’s new acquisition Stephane Sessegnon on Friday, Chelsea have put in an offer with St Etienne.

He's French. From Wikipedia:

Dimitri Payet (born 29 March 1987 in Saint-Pierre, Réunion) is a French football player of Réunionnais heritage who currently plays for French club Saint-Étienne in Ligue 1. He primarily plays as an attacking midfielder and a winger and is a French international having made his debut in 2010.

He's french. Perhaps his family has russian ancestry or something. Or else they just liked that name.

Maybe we will try to spread out payments on his fee and lose this transfer too.

Fun fact, most transfers on the continent are done over instalments. In fact many in England are, too. Usually the instalments last the length of the player's contract, so anything from 3 to 5 years in general. The main reason the Ronaldo to Man Utd deal was accepted so readily because it was unusually paid in one lump sum. We were well within our rights to expect to pay for Luiz under instalments, but the fact that we were in a weak position and Benfica in a strong position means they could demand quite a lot from us.

Payet has been linked with a number of clubs e.g. Liverpool, Juventus , Inter Milan.

According to French sources, Spurs have targeted the St Etienne 23 year old. He is regarded as one of the brighter talents in League 1.

I have not seen him in action but understand he can play on the wing or behind the striker. Apparently he is also a free-kick specialist.

He may be what we need and the price is right.

In the old days yes but not now . If the deal is between two EPL clubs the full ammount of the transfer deal has to be paid during the season . So if Torres is done it is basically a cash up front payment deal which is why Benfica may have been p*ssed of at us wanting to pay in instalments , agreed this is usually how the deals are done in europe .
