Zhirkov booed by his own fans in Russia

Featured Replies

Booing your own international players? Yeah that would never happen in England would it?

Couldn't care less if truth be told , he isnt a Chelsea player anymore. The reasons for booing him are a bit bizarre but Im sure he'll cope.

Not to that extent

Not to that extent

Not sure how youve simply assumed that because Zhirkov was booed those of a different race and religion automatically will be too!

Im all for blaming FIFA for anything and everything but I think you should take a small step back here.

apparently for this reason:

‘Russian lawmaker Valery Draganov on Thursday said the hostility stemmed from ingrained nationalism among the Russian fans, who are loathe to see Zhirkov, an ethnic Slav, represent a team from the North Caucasus, a predominantly Muslim region along Russia’s southern fringe.’

its a shame cause he obviously went back to Russia, cause he missed his home etc, family whatever. and gets booed by his own fans. was always a fan of his but yeh did sh1t all at chelsea

He may not be a Chelsea player anymore, but I'm a bit worried for him, what with playing in apparently "one of Russia's most dangerous and unstable regions" and now this.

Anzhi players live and train in the Moscow region according to the BBC. They fly home to play their home games in Dagestan but thats all.

And as it always is, everything is hyped up in the media and if you are in reality in one of those "unstalbe" regions you wont notice anything.

Yeah, he may not have been a sensation here, but f**k that, the guy seems like a friendly and likable bloke. Glad to see his teammates, coaches, and opponents took a stand for him.

I dont mean to generalize, but why is it some Russian fans seem to fly off the handle or turn on a player for the stupidest reasons?

Agreed. Whether he was the best player or worst player we ever had, I wish him all the best and am sad to see his next career step start off like this.

well right now, dagestan is a lot more stable and safer than england

Horrible attitude.

They should be glad to have a player of Yury's quality. For a club with so much money and potential as a result of it, their fans are going to need to open their narrow minds if they are to realise that potential.

Yuri might not be a Chelsea player anymore and he might not have been great here, but he played for Chelsea and did his best without any complaining when he didn't get to play. He deserves some respect and good luck for the future.

fully agree on that, didnt complain once and got on with it despite being played out of position and having to sit on the bench for ages.

And this is where we are supposed to have our World Cup in just under 7 years?? If they are booing and abusing their own players, what chance do Black and Jewish players have over there?

Great work FIFA, absolutely shameful.

Like the English booed Frank Lampard and Emile Heskey a few years back right?

Who should have got it? England? Where your 11 year olds are allowed to run riot through the streets murdering innocent civilians and burning businesses? Hypocricy at its finest......

Dont think the English have any right to complain about the awarding of the World Cups to Russia or Qatar after the sad events that have occured over the last week.

PS. Jews wouldnt get booed. Abramovich is Jewish and he owns the biggest club in Russia......CSKA.

Err, a joke? He had a business relationship through their sponsorship deal, but that was the extent of that.

It wasn't his new fans booing him was it?

I don't see why I should still have any major feelings for Zhirkov. He did his best and it didn't work out. I don't have any feelings for Les Fridge, Jon Coady or Dave Mitchell so I dont see why I should now have any for Yuri Zhirkov. He gets a thanks for his efforts and time with us bu not much else from me. It's not like it's Frank leaving or when Franco or King Kerry left us is it?

If that's a horrible attitude then I'm sorry if it offends you and more fool me.

Foolish to think he doesnt have some stake in local football in Russia. He may not own teams or invest in person, but I guarantee his connections go through third parties. Anyways that wasnt the point of my argument. Point is Abramovich is a Jew, but respected on all sides by the football loving Russians!

Definitly not. The supporters of his club wouldnt be seen dead supporting the national team. The people booing Yuri were Ethnic Russian Slavs who dont agree with him going to play for a team based in the State of Dagestan, which is populated by an Ethnic Turkic Muslim population that hate the Russian state. Its the equivilent of an Irishman going to play for an English team or something (back when the situation was volotile).

That's what I thought. Not sure what that other poster is taking about.

Russia has one of the highest concentrations of neo-Nazi's in the world. The USSR breaking up was one of the worst things that's happened to Russian society of late in terms of the rise of right wingers.

Maybe, but we could name a lot of nations for whom the occupation by the USSR, and the oppression of the totalitarian communist regimes supported by the USSR were the worst things that ever happened to them. The USSR had to go along with communist rot in Europe, the world is better off without them. I much rather freedom of speech and the bunch of neo-nazis that it brings.

Also racism was present in the communist era as well, it was simply more hidden. Except when it suited the regimes. In Hungary for example, in the '80s they were spreading anti-Polish propaganda in order to ensure minimal sympathy with the emerging Solidarity movement in Poland. I can not imagine that the big brother USSR was working much differently.
