Posted January 6, 200718 yr And there you have it. Carvalho was superb today. In midfield and up front. But he had a fecking nightmare in defense. William Gallas just didn't make mistakes like that. Ever. And that's why he was worth the ?100K per week.
January 6, 200718 yr beat me to it just...neil barnett has been blabbering on chelsea tv saying why aren't chelsea fans raving about carvalho, who needs gallas etc...well today was the perfect example, (as was fulham and reading )...he's always got a major cock-up like that in his locker and therefore we can never relax in a game...that defending was pi** poor and while it didn't cost us today, it could be the difference between the Premiership or champions League...gallas made less mistakes in his whole Chelsea career than carvalho does in one match...we can worry about his attitude, but as a defender he was one of the best we have ever had.

And that's why he was worth the ?100K per week. I heard Carvalho slipped, and that it was p***in down with rain at the time. You think twinkle toes Gallas would not slip in those conditions? How many times do you fall over when your playing and its been raining like that?
January 7, 200718 yr i remember a certain Mr Gallas slipping & causing us to lose our only game in the league against Man City two seasons ago
January 7, 200718 yr I think carvalho has been in excellent form this season and it really tells by how few times gallas' name is mentioned. sure, he's a better defender, but he's gone. I wish he could get the credit he deserves- no one talks untill he has a bad game- and f*ck me, it was a slip, in poor conditions, and hey, he scored anyway and we won 6-1. p.s. he's better than toure, and less prone to haircuts.
January 7, 200718 yr why are we bad mouthing him for this, carvy was fantastic today other than that and everyone slips he cannot be getting roasted like this
January 7, 200718 yr Author i remember a certain Mr Gallas slipping & causing us to lose our only game in the league against Man City two seasons ago OK. The fact is you could sit there from now and until doomsday and struggle to name three errors of that magnitude from Gallas. Whereas with Carvalho you could make a very long list of such errors very quickly. As the Brit quite rightly pointed out, he is prone to this type of thing. If the conditions under foot are poor, (same for eveyone else on the pitch by the way), don't try and be clever, clear the farking ball into the stand. Perhaps I'm a bit old fashioned. First and foremost I want my defenders to defend. After all that's what they are paid for. I'm not impressed by them skipping past opponents on the halfway line or putting in a great cross from the right wing. Many people are, I'm not. I'm especially not impressed if two minutes later they are losing their man on the edge of our box and the opposition create an opening. Carvalho is a very good footballer, but he is not IMO a great defender. Frank Le Beouf was exactly the same.
January 7, 200718 yr I'm not really sure what the arguement is here. No-one is saying that Gallas isn't better than Carvalho. If you are saying Carvalho is no good then I and a lot of others might disagree. Slaughtering him for his error yesterday seems a little harsh to me. As does saying he makes more mistakes in one match than Gallas has made in his whole career. and just to reiterate, Gallas plays for Arsenal now - or rather he would if he was fit. No amount of whingeing is going to bring him back & having a go at Carvalho because of it is totally off the mark - it wasn't his decision to sell Gallas
January 7, 200718 yr If we're getting at our defenders, for me Ashley Cole has made more mistakes this season than anybody. The initial 'strange' clearances by Our Ashley were justified by the old chestnut 'he needs time to settle in/get used to a new system'. The most recent average performances have been swallowed up by the 'missing JT and Cech' excuse, but for me he's nowhere near good enough to be classed as the 'best left-back in the World' - not even close. His positional sense is useless, his decision making even worse, passing is atrocious - in fact the only thing he has going for him is pace. Everyone is on at Sheva and Ballack for the downturn in our results and performances this season but I don't see Cole ripping up any trees either. As for Carvalho, the guy has been playing with an ankle injury for most of this season and has been pretty good up till recently. Anyone would suffer under the weight of playing with first Boula-snooze and then Ferreira! Carvalho is the sort of defender that attacks the ball and needs the Bank of England behind him to bail him out when it goes tits-up. It's worked for two years, he's a winner, I don't see that one (almighty) mistake is anything to worry about. JT and Cech are integral to the base of this team - without them we have the ball less, we are more vulnerable at the back and the team needs to work harder to achieve anything. With those two guys there the odd mistake from Carvalho and the wayward play of Ashley Cole are things we can live with. As for continually harping back to our ex number 13, I would like to have it put on record that if he begged to come back crawling over broken glass and hot coals, singing Blue is the Colour and sucking Jose's dick, I would still tell him to f**k right off back to the Gallas Cowboys!!

Gallas isn't better than Carvalho. Jack makes a great point in his post about Carvalho attacking the ball and then needing the Bank Of England behind to bail him out when it goes tits up. He's right. And it's that type of on-the-edge defending and rash decision making which gives me palpitations and cold sweats. Since Gallas has gone people on here keep telling me how brilliantly Carvy has been performing. But IMO Carvalho still makes these type of errors with distressing regularity. Far too regularly to be considered a "great" defender. He'll probably have three or four good games now, (he was extremely poor against Fulham mind), and then drop another boo boo like yesterdays. As such he is always as likely to be a liability as he is a saviour. Personally, I prefer my defenders to be more solid and reliable than that.
January 7, 200718 yr That is exactly my point ES. Gallas isn't better than Carvalho. Is or isn't? Now I am confused :?:
January 7, 200718 yr I'll admit there are many times when I miss Gallas, we always felt so confident with him at the back. Carvalho really isn't a bad second however, any team in the world would jump at the chance to take him off of us.

January 7, 200718 yr I still stand by what i said...people can say it was only macclesfield, we still won 6-1 etc, but it was very poor...carvalho has his good games for sure and I always find it funny when he charges forward like a nutter looking for a goal...but he is prone to mistakes...he's had a chance to be a real leader like jt recently and while i concede it has been hard for him playing alongside ferreira, he has been in the defence that has conceded all these sloppy goals of late that has so angered all the fans...I'm not completely against him, I named him as one of the good players in the shocker against Villa... people question why talk about gallas now? In the five years he was here we never defended like we did against everton, wigan, reading and Fulham...we asked ourselves when the deal for cole and gallas was done who had got the better deal...I said at the time that we paid money to make our defence weaker and our defensive record this season proves that already
January 7, 200718 yr sofa manager and jack make excellent points. jack also mentioned cashley. I agree actually, but then, as I don't like the man it would be hard for people to accept my opinions on the player as unbiased. luckily, I'm not sure I care anymore.
January 8, 200718 yr Carvalho has been good, is good. Sometimes I think we treat our players too harshly. At the moment the back four is a bit of a shambles and the mainstay is Ricky. He did slip yesterday and it cost us a goal but I don't think he makes that many mistakes. Gallas was great too but IMO he was the near perfect player that he's being made out to be. His greatest asset was his versatility and now he's gone because HE wanted out. By the way what has happened to his promise to "tell all", and if I'm not mistaken "to take legal action" over claims that he threatened to purposely score an own goal?

January 8, 200718 yr I would like to take this opportunity to thank whoever was to blame for the Macclsefield goal. On advice from another forum I placed a crisp ?5 @10-1 for Murphy to score anytime as it was obvious we would concede at least one goal (to me anyway). Deep joy. NB Had we lost I would have made ?400 but I'll let that go.
January 8, 200718 yr Betting against your own side - disgraceful BTW At the beginning of the season I checked the price for Chels to win nothing in 06/07 - only 5:2!

January 8, 200718 yr To be fair, betting on Chelsea to lose against Macclesfield should not be a hanging offence. Just don't do it again.
January 9, 200718 yr If we had lost it would have softened the blow, but as I've never done it before it shouldn't be hard to abstain from such such shocking behaviour in future. I doubt I'll getsuch good odds for Bolton to beat Arse because they do it so often.
