England outplayed by an average Italian side........why?.

Top grade, multimillion pound Premier League players looking like they have no idea what to do when in possesion of a football,or more so,when they don't........how come?.

Having a Scotish International player in you're squad used to mean you were a good side.........not anymore, not for a long, long time to be honest, why is this?.

After all these years of great facilties, homegrown players playing & training alongside top foreign pros, players working under some of the best coaches in the game, playing in domestic European cup competition against the Worlds best, with multi millions of t.v.cash thrown at it........the domestic home grown player, still seams to be miles behind everyone else!.

Why is this?,is there an excuse,or is it that we just seam to be unable to face the harsh truth about our shortcomings?.

Just what the hell is going on?.Just what can be done to change our fate?.

Has anyone got a great plan (however painfull), to improve things?.

Quit emphasizing athleticism over skill in the youth ranks. If a player can run a blazing 100m but can't make proper decisions with the ball at his feet when the play slows down, then he should be a sprinter, not a footballer. That's not a catchall that will reverse England's fortune overnight, but it's the necessary first step before worrying about anything else.

Because there are only two meaningful tournaments and they are held every four years at two year intervals. So qualification and a handful of meaningless friendly games in between hardly gets the juices flowing. England have always had the spirit and heart but never the talent its just the way we were brought up as kids. The English coaches at youth level don't have the talent either and they won't let creative players be creative. England does have some good young talent waiting in the wings but we typically choose older mature players. I say start playing the U21 as the national team with Hart in goal with the right coaching over the next two years we might actually be in with a shout.

What other tournaments do Germany Italy and Spain get to compete in that England don't?

Why do England consistently struggle against opponents regardless of relative individual ability?

If England produces poor players then where do the likes of Lampard, Rooney, Cole, Terry and Gerrard come from?

England's biggest problem is that despite a trove of talent they fail to replicate club performances at the lower standard international level.

I'm wondering whether English players staying in their home league has something to do with it. There is the occasional player going to a foreign club, but as a rule Brits stay at home (although this might just be a sign that foreign clubs just don't want to sign them). I feel players can learn a lot from playing in a foreign competition for a few years. Get them out of their comfort zone, hammer some different training methods into them perhaps, learn to live with a different mentality, things like that. As long as things don't improve at grassroots level, this might be a way forward.

Just a thought.

Your last comment is exactly one of the many reasons for our failures, I just don't think the star players put the same energy into the games, you only have to look at this Euro Cup..Rooney, Young, Milner (rubbish anyway) Parker, Gerrard (disappeared against Italy) all played below average, the entire back four and Hart were the only performers. Playing for England used to mean something, that seems to have disappeared over the years apart from a few players...Terry for example is a true patriot I can't think of any other players over recent years who has been so patriotic for his country.
