I do believe it's just a myth that goldfishes have short memories. They can in fact remember things for much longer than that.

They're also not really golden, it's just the colour they have in captivity. Release them into the wild and they turn a brown colour I think.

Why aren't they called Brownfish and appear on University Challenge then?

To be fair, the French call them redfish.

 

I would like Moos to provide some evidence for his stated "fact" that they can remember things for much longer than "that".

 

How many goldfish has he used in his trials?  What memory tests did he apply to them?
