That sounds like it was more than a simple dislocated shoulder, that something is torn. In those cases recovery can take weeks. Hopefully it's not that serious.

Watched USA/Colombia and Mexico/Uruguay, and the referees made an impression. The ref and linesman in the first game were excellent. Caught a lot of things, all the offside calls right including a few very close ones, fair, had good control of the game. The ref in the second game was so harsh, not in a bad way as he was fair and applied the same standards to both teams. Lots of yellows, cards for being mouthy, coaching staff member expelled for being mouthy. Sort of good to see.

USA faked a few times which is disappointing because they've traditionally been one of the most honest teams. I guess Klinsmann is rubbing off in them.

The crowd in the Mexico game pretty much 100% Mexico. Their fans are awful. When Uruguay scored, stuff came raining down on the field. Not just a few bad apples. Probably at least 100 bottles many of which were filled and could have done serious damage if they hit someone.

The Mexican players are a lot classier than their fans. They also looked sharp.

At the beginning of the game, they played the Chile national anthem instead of the Uruguay one! :face_palm:

Mexico had a player with one hell of a throw in. If he were to work on it to get a flat trajectory like Delap did, it could be a potent weapon for them. They should seriously consider hiring Delap or a coach of one of the throwing sports. Delap was a very good (by Irish standards) at javelin before focusing on football.

I'm not familiar with the Sigi Schmid, but I was thinking they might do well with a Pulis type. Someone who can grind out ugly wins with players of below average ability. I imagine Pulis wants to stay in Britain and if he were to coach a national team it would be Wales. On the other hand Pulis was willing to take some risks signing unknown MLS Americans, and I think Geoff Cameron had a pretty good relationship with him.

I was also thinking about Owen Coyle since he was coaching in the MLS but apparently he wanted to return to Britain, and now Blackburn have him.

Van Gaal might not be a bad choice to be honest. The players seem like the type van Gaal would like in that they'll buy into a clear system, take direction well, and work hard without complaining about being stifled since there's not much to be stifled in the first place.

The problem with Klinsmann in all the jobs he's done is that he doesn't have a clear system or approach.

Pulis and Coyle good god no. We need someone who wants to attack and fix our youth set up, which Jurgen has done a good job on.

Van Gaal wouldn't be a bad choice. The only reservation I have is I dont think he'd get on with our players very well.

I have to disagree w/ that sentiment. In the 5th minute 5' Bobby Wood fouled by Zapata in the box. No call from the Mexican referee. Replays showed that Zapata got no parts of the ball, but he makes the call on Yedlin. IMHO that was a straight forward handball in the box, cause Yedlin's hands are extended from his body & he stops the flight of the ball. There are some saying that it wasn't a PK.

Agreed on the Yedlin handball. I think the ref was right. US were unfortunate not to get that early penalty. Their best spell of the game was probably first half hour apart from Colmbia's goal. However second half US started with no energy and, despite a late rally, they were fortunate that Colombia didn't rack up a bigger score.

Tonight is a big game for US in my home city of Chicago. I reckon they will squeak a narrow win.

I was a bit disappointed with the quality of football in the first few games. Brazil especially were very average. Thankfully Mexico brought the tournament to life with that exciting win over Uruguay. Also was a very good game between Argentina an Chile last night. I have to admit though I will probably be distracted once the Euro's start.

I thought that Bolivia match vs Panama was good - also Brazil didn't bring their A-team. IMHO Brazil were lucky to come away w/ a draw - Can't really tell if that ball from Bolanos cross went over the end line - Brazil might have benefited from that call

I agree that Pulis or Coyle wouldn't be realistic nor ideal, but I was thinking that maybe there's a coach of the same mold who can grind out ugly wins from below average players.

Van Gaal is one of my absolute most despised people in the sport, but I can see him doing well and not running into as many personal conflicts as in the past.

The USA players don't strike me as spoiled prima donnas. They don't have the same money or fame as other players under van Gaal. They seem like a nice hard working bunch who need a coach that can give them direction.

I can't see van Gaal taking the job though. His severance alone from Man United was £5 million, so it would be an enormous pay cut.

What's with the hairstyles on the Chileans and Argentinians? The Chileans look like cockatoos, and the Argentinians look like cupcakes the way they have a mop of hair in the center but shaved close at the sides. Those two teams also probably had the least amount of surface area uncovered by tattoos that I've ever seen in a game.

What do you think about Messi's beard? I think it works on him.

I don't think we have below average players. Especially some of the younger players who have been capped look very promising. We will need someone to grind out wins in CONCACAF though since a portion of our competition like to turn matches into rugby whenever they play us.

Van Gaal could go two ways I suppose. He could come in and even though he's a dick the players may respect him and take in what he says or they could also decide he's a dick and they want no part of it. I think the latter is more likely because we as Americans are very headstrong and dont take sh*t from people. I think thats one reason Jurgen took in so many German born players when he signed on.

Maybe we could interest ol' Pellegrino in a job if things dont go well.

exciting action from Group A (well not so much for Los Ticos) - first The Yanks whooped on Costa Rica 4-0 - England take notes for the next time your side play Los Ticos - then miraculously James is able to recover from his shoulder injury & play vs Paraguay - that was probably the best match of the tournament as Colombia was one step ahead of 10 man Paraguay - checkout the goal of the tournament so far from Victor Ayala of Paraguay

Peru - people of a certain age in Scotland, who remember the 1978 World Cup will never forget what they did to Scotland.

Ally McLeod completely under estimated them and they beat Scotland 3-1.

As an Englishman at the time it was funny.

well at least no one got bit

From what I heard, Luis Suarez was told that he was on the team list when he actually wasn't, and he didn't find out until this moment?!

so that gives Suarez the excuse to throw a temper tantrum like a lil' kid? Dude is a professional & needs to grow up - just like biting people - this is stuff I did when I was about 3 years old

I didn't say anything about it being okay to throw a tantrum. Just pointing out that if reports are correct, the manager did something really odd that I can see many players getting upset at. Not break-the-wall upset, but upset.

I've found the games at Copa America to be more entertaining than the small number of games so far at Euros. Great pace in many of the games.

There has definitely been some good skill on display but I have enjoyed watching the Euro's more so far. Probably because I am more used to the European style of play. Also the atmosphere has been better at the Euro games I think. Although it has got out of control in a few places of course.

Anyway it is nice to be able watch both tournaments. Differrnt styles of play but some great football.

US team bounced back really well from that first defeat. They will fancy their chances in qf. I wonder if Colombia will be happier to face Brazil in the QF than potentially Argentina in the semi? They might regret playing such a weak team last night.

Did you see Messi the other night? :shok:
