mancu bias in commentaries

Featured Replies

sure its not me being biased - but match commentary watching mancu is ridiculous - lots subtle stuff like

1. actual - rooney shoots wide from 12 yards out - commentary 'rooney - shoots just a yard wide' - why not 'rooney misses easy chance' or;

2. actual - giggs chips the ball to no one in particular - commentary 'giggs plays clever chip' - why not 'giggs gives the ball away there'

and so on - well this season at least I'll miss their europa league games unfortunately - HAHA

listened to 'talksport' on satellite radio today so I'm not sure when it was originally broadcast, but all I heard was how the CL as a competition was now weaker with the two Manc teams out and the entire groupings were a farce given that City went out with having more points than others who qualified in other groups...what utter bullsh*t, both teams should have qualified easily except both teams f**ked up, as we nearly did. If I hear one more comment that this was City's maiden year in the competition..blah, blah, blah..utter crap. They have a manager who has been there before and world class experience players so I don't buy that excuse; the only one worth accepting is that the players didn't show up when they should have done...Goodye and good riddance to the Manc's ...enjoy the Europa cup...

Guess it's up to the South to fly the flag in Europe....just sick of hearing the excuses from the Manc's...whine, whine, whine, I think what we have seen most of the season is that Utd is really a weak team, especially in midfield if Nani and Rooney couldn't play Utd would be up sh*ts creek without a paddle, I think unless they make some big signings in the Jan window we just might be fighting with them for 3/4th place

You were listening to DriveTime, as was I. 8am show for me in California, but I know it's the afternoon show in London.

Durham is a tool. But that's not shocking news to anyone here, I'm sure.

Yesterday, he was saying our win over Valencia sent us backwards. He said it proved AVB has no idea what he's doing, so he simply asked Terry what Mourinho would've done, and went with that plan. Darren, to his credit, was like, "uhhh...you realize they won 3-0 and finished top of their group, right?"

And then today, he went off about how the the entire selection process for the CL group stage is wrong, and that City going out with 10 points and United out with 9 points is crap because there were teams with 8 and 9 points that got through. He essentially argued that City's inexperience (and thus, low coefficient) should be thrown out the window, and they should be seeded into a pot based on how good their team is now (if that's not the most subjective way of doing things I've ever heard of, I don't know what is).

Then he said the Europa League is now a bigger tournament than the CL this year because the Manchester teams are involved. I guess those two carry more weight than Chelsea, Arsenal, Barca, Madrid, Bayern, Inter, Milan, Marseille, Lyon, CSKA, and Zenit combined.

Also, he said the City and United Europa games will get all the TV viewers, and no one is even going to care about Chelsea's next round games in the CL.

I know sports radio guys have to be controversial to stir up interest, so I'm hoping for his sake that he's just trying to stir the pot and doesn't actually believe half the sh*t that spills out of his mouth. He was going on and on earlier this season about how City was better than Barca now and blah, blah, blah.....so I'm sure it hurts to see his beloved adopted team brought to his knees. God forbid we beat them at the Bridge on Monday.....I can only imagine what kind of excuses he'll come up with for Tuesday's show.

First time I have listened to the satellite in a long while, these two seemed to waste valuable time talking about 'Pandas' and small humans dressing up to act like Pandas...I thought it was a football show not Zoo time?

It needs to be pointed out (and i have in another thread) that city ony played a 2nd string munich team, this is a factor in there 10 points.

Look, durams job is to antagonise, the station know that if he's contraversial people will reach for there phones. I have heard him say some horrible things about lampard and then when it became popular oppinion that lampard should be droped for england he swung the other way becaue it would wind up the bigger audiance. Im not sure he actually knows anything about football. he just knows how to wind people up... simple answer, dont listen

That's exactly it, he is paid to have opinions that will annoy people enough to get them phoning in..

If everyone agreed with what he said there would be nothing to talk about.

He is a knob though

Totally agree, and I said the same in my post. If he doesn't stir up trouble, the phones don't ring and he doesn't get ratings. Doesn't make it any less irritating though.

Here I was thinking that Bolling on Fox News accusing the Muppets movie of brainwashing kids to be liberal was the most ridiculous media moment of the week. But Durham takes the cake again.

Durham is very good at his job, or he wouldn't be on the radio. As mentioned, he'll change his view completely if it stirs up the most controversy.

Just enjoy the fact that they've been dumped out of the CL in the groups. City had a tough group and you can see why they failed (though with the money spent they shouldn't have), but United are an absolute laughing stock. 1 point from 6 against the mighty Basel. Some journalists are clearly biased towards them but it just makes it more hilarious when they're forced to come up with ridiculous excuses when it all goes wrong.

The elephant in the room is that every commentator and Man U player and fan thought they'd walk their group and they didn't. It's as simple as that. They go into every CL with an appalling record and attitude in the group stages, and this year it finally bit them in the arse.

City's failure to qualify was entirely in their own hands. They dominated Napoli and Villareal over two legs and couldn't take enough chances to make it count.

Villarreal had 0 points.

I don't believe the presenters believe half the stuff they're made to spurt out on Talk Sport. They're just told by the producers "today you're the one attacking xyz and you're the one defending xyz". Classic good cop / bad cop tactics to get people riled up. They don't get listeners so annoyed that they turn off (although I've stopped listening), they get them annoyed enough to keep listening until one of them (or someone phoning in) brings up points that are in keeping with the listener's point of view on a subject so they feel satisfied and think to themselves "See, there are people that agree with me".

It's a horribly cynical way of structuring Talk radio but it's also incredibly effective.
