FIFA Awards

Featured Replies

Did anyone see the FIFA Award Show yesterday. All the big names from the football world were there. Pele, Zidane, Beckenbauer, Van Bastan, Ferguson, Baresi, Neymar. Everyone. Also Ferguson won a life time achievement award

Team of the year

Casillas

Alves Pique Vidic Ramos

Alonso

Xavi Iniesta

Messi Rooney Ronaldo

Barcelona 5 players

Real Madrid 4 players

Manchester United 2 players

I saw something on Twitter that claimed to be John Terry's released vote for Player of the Year/Ballon D'or: Messi, Xavi, Rooney

Most years I'd make a big case about why Lampard or Drogba not making the shortlist is a travesty, but I don't have much to complain about last year. If it truly is judged from what a player does in a calendar year, then RVP got shafted.

does Sergio Ramos ever play left back? As far as i know he is primarily right back and occasionally a centre back. Ashley Cole is still the worlds best left back and has performed at a high level throughout the year, should definitely be there over someone who never plays the position.

In 2011 Vidic hasnt exactly replicated his usually high standards and not having RVP in the is ridiculous, been far better than rooney. These things are always a farce anyway so dont take them too seriously

Mine would probably be:

----------Casillas

Alves Pique Kompany Marcelo

-----------Yaya

-------Xavi Iniesta

Messi --------------Ronaldo

-----------RVP

Looking at the list you can easily see we didn't win anything last season. There is not going to be anyone from our squad next time either, at this rate anyway.

On Messi, anyone else feel until he either moves away from Barcelona or does it for Argentina he wont be remembered as a true great alongside the likes of Puskas, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff etc? I`m not saying he isnt a brilliant player, he quite obviously is the best footballer of the current generation, but thats at a club he has been at since a child and one where the team is pretty much built around him, yet for his national team he has struggled to have an impact in a different style of play.

no, and I wouldn't make that argument against maldini (for example) either.

though I see what you are saying, I suppose you have to remember he went from a youth teamer to having the side built around him. to break into a side with ronaldinho, deco, eto'o and xavi and become the focal point of the side is an achievement in itself.

Difference with Maldini is he did it for Italy. Your right in saying being the focal player in a squad like that is a hell of an achievement for one so young, but I do think until he does it for Argentina it will be a negative thrown at him.

I was more talking about him having to leave his club / spanish football.

but actually I don't even think he's not done it for argentina. I think it is... well, not a myth, but whenever I see him play for them he looks like their best player by far and often the best player on the pitch. the last world cup is a good example- he didn't score, but I felt he was at the heart of anything good that argentina did.

I also think it will be impossible for him and even moreso for ronaldo to repeat the kind of goalscoring form they produce for their clubs. spain aside those two clubs are far and away the outstanding sides in world football.

then I suppose there is the argument that the champions league latter stages is the highest standard of football anyway these days. personally I think the 16 side european championship is the best international tournament in terms of quality (though I accept it doesn't have the same magic or prestige as the world cup)

Ah right, sorry. I would argue about him doing it for Argentina though, I thought he was very disappointing in the world cup, but then again most so called superstars were. Its almost as if he just hasnt got the confidence when playing for his national side, he certainly doesnt go looking for the ball anywhere near as much (though that could easily be down to his instructions I suppose).
