I have to believe that Jose, regardless of what he said about not being against selling players to a rival to keep them in the best league in the world, is smarter than actually doing that - and to think the Deadly Teddy has been Chelsea's best player for the past two seasons! But as a long suffering Chelsea fan, September 2nd cannot come soon enough, LOL. Just so I can get some sleep at night, this is how I rationalize this: (1) United are giving Chelsea a taste of our own medicine - we chase after Rooney, they chase after Mata. This is more of an "unsettling" tactic before the big game today, as they may feel we have been trying to unsettle them. VERDICT: United are just trying to unsettle Chelsea before the big match; not literally going to happen. (2) There could be a bit of cheek to it too, of course. Moyes knows that Rooney could be reborn at Chelsea under a great motivating manager like Jose, and just as much as Rooney may have become a bit of a destabilizing force in the Manchester United dressing room, and on large wages that they would sooner not be paying if they don't also get the performances on the pitch, they would be crazy to agree to selling him to Chelsea and strengthening us just that much more. As such, they'll think that taking Mata away from us would negate some of that, as well as get their fans onside with the idea. VERDICT: United are just trying to do something rather predictable; not literally going to happen. (3) Mata has not been figuring prominently in the early season for Chelsea because he returned to pre-season training late, and is behind his team mates in the fitness stakes. United could probably have chosen any number of Chelsea players to target, e.g. Hazard would have been a high-impact destabilizing target, but Mata is the one who hasn't been playing. He also doesn't know (and trust in) Jose in the same way Frank, JT, Ash, Ess and Petr know him. VERDICT: Again, rather predictable, but not literally going to happen. But you may ask: why the h*ll did we sign Willian. Doesn't he also play in any of the three positions behind the striker that Mata plays in? Well, again more fodder for sleepless nights. I'm going to choose to believe that it has to be one of the other players currently vying for one of those positions, i.e. Schurrle, de Bruyne and Mose, that may feel their place is under threat. When everyone is fit, I'm thinking Hazard, Mata and Oscar must start. Willian then would be the next name on the list in terms of a polished player, particularly for the Champions League. For me, Moses would be the player most at risk from this latest acquisition. Slightly ironic since he probably was one of our better performers in pre-season, but if you based it on his performances last season then I think you could make the point. VERDICT: Willian would not be replacing Mata, but rather Moses. At least, this is how I choose to see this. Good night.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Butch

Not worried we didn't score more goals as those will come - we created enough to score about 8 goals on the day. I am more interested in our "team defense", as that was the hallmark of Jose's Chelsea the first time around, and that was happily back for us to see. I just love us being defensively solid. You just know we can find that one or two goals somewhere with the players we have. This is going to be the hallmark of a league champion. Cheers, Butch

Dear Friends, As I have received a few queries about whether the competition is still running this season, I wanted to write and say that yes, the BPL lives on for another season (and of course, thanks to PR who runs the submission form). I will be implementing one very minor change this season: by minor, I mean that it doesn't entail any changes to what PR or BPL entrants have to do. The change is on the back-end, i.e. me. I will be separating point tallies for the (a) EPL, (b) the two domestic cup competitions, and © the European competition - CL, EL and ESC. I think this would encourage more entries for the domestic cup competitions as it would take away the fear of poor cup competition scores diluting your average scores. Of course, if you have any suggestions for improving the competition, please feel free to let me know. Cheers, Butch

- Blackman - hasn't played nearly enough, especially since Schwarzer arrived, to be able to say one way or the other. - Wallace - has looked impressive; has speed and is not afraid to take people on. - Kalas - looked the least impressive of our CBs who have played; needs games. - De Bruyne - has looked good when played; suffered what looked at the time like a bad injury against the Indonesian team, but has recovered remarkably; always looking to be involved and linking up with Lukaku and Schurrle, and scored a cracker when he got injured against the Indonesians. - McEachran - hasn't played any where near enough to say one way or the other. - Chalobah - looked composed against the Thai All Stars, but that is all I can say about him. - Van Ginkel - I have been extremely impressed with the young Dutch midfielder; struck me as mostly an attacking player before his arrival but I have to say his work ethic and defensive work has been most impressive. - Piazon - not done enough when he has played, and not played enough to really say one way or the other. - Essien - don't agree with people who say he's back to his best; what I will say is he hasn't been stretched, but he has not been afraid to go into challenges. - Schurrle - looks like a quick player who will be good to have in games where we want to counter at speed, and seems to have struck up a bit of an understanding with De Bruyne, but the end product is not yet there on a consistent basis, although that volleyed goal he scored the other day was nicely done. - Lukaku - looked like a beast against the Asian players, as was expected, but has struggled to impose himself against the big teams in the States; this is partly due to a different style of play Jose has employed: a defensive 4-3-3 where the striker is relatively isolated (this was most apparent against Madrid); in this style of play, the striker has to be able to hold up play to bring his mates into the attack, and Lukaku has struggled with that for the most part. What I will say is that we have a great squad of young players who will only improve. We have looked compact and solid, the same way we used to be under Jose the first time around. The passing and movement is good, but we're struggling to keep possession in attack. Eden Hazard has also struggled, partly because he doesn't see much of the ball, and partly because when he does he gets crowded out easily as not many players are supporting him in attack. Never seen anywhere from any reputable sources that Chelsea are interested in De Rossi. Am inclined to believe this unlikely. Still, if it happened, 13 million quid or anything close to that would be such an absolute steal as to be unbelievable. Would be an awesome, awesome signing for us though, and would bring some steel to our midfield. Just imagine De Rossi operating in front of our back four, behind the likes of Oscar/Lamps and Van Ginkel/Ramires who have the propensity to get forward and support our attackers. 1. Falcao - some weird multi-ownership deal put paid to this long-standing interest, and, I believe, our number one target. In the end, money talked, and I don't think the Columbian is going to be too happy with playing in the French league, but he did a deal with the devil and all that... 2. Cavani - looking rather familiar (see number 1 above). I think Napoli will be laughing all the way to the bank. Now way is he worth 53 million quid + abominable wages. Napoli could hold out because they don't need to sell. As such, PSG will get their man because they can afford it, while we are crippled by the FFP. When Barcelona can sign Neymar and we can't sign Cavani, you have to seriously ask the question, "Who is this FFP really helping? Level playing field my a**!". 3. Lewandowski - his heart is set on Bayern, while Dortmund don't want him to go there. Still, the only reason he'd go anywhere else is because his relationship with Dortmund deteriorates beyond repair. Maybe while he is wherever he ends up (en route to his favored destination), his head can be turned and he may actually fall in love with the new club, fans and competition, but I have to say it would feel strange to have a player on your books that, at least initially, wants to be elsewhere. 4. Gomez - This is a name that has been mentioned several times during various summers as a possible signing for us, and one that I wouldn't completely rule out. He will turn 28 in two days time, and would seem to be in his prime. He probably would desire a move away as he has fallen behind Mandzukic as Bayern's first choice, stemming from being sidelined with an ankle injury that required surgery. 5. Hulk - the Brazilian continues to be linked, but (a) I believe our most serious interest was during the AVB days and he would more likely end up at Spurs if they had the money, and (b) he isn't a striker anyway, and would more likely become competition for the likes of Mata, Hazard and Moses than Torres and Ba. So, there you have it. I think the likelihood that we would miss out on the likes of Falcao and Cavani became rather obvious to us rather quickly, and thus we were quick out the gates to get Schurrle. I have a feeling Jose would be happy for us to sit on this, and to evaluate his options when pre-season training resumes in ernest today. Cheers, Butch

Remember when Jose was banned to the stands for one of the CL matches, and he and Rui Faria decided to con the officials into thinking they were communicating through wireless radio? Faria had one of those stretchy caps on and had it down over the top of his ears, with one hand cupped to his left ear at all times, and multiple glances over in Jose's direction every now and then. I think the officials actually stopped the match to come to the Chelsea bench to ask Faria to take off his cap and show his ears, to find there was nothing, much to their chagrin. Absolutely comical!
