There will be a couple of interesting personnel decisions for Jose to make (or reveal, rather). First is the keeper situation. Will he start with Cech and say it is because Courtois hasn't had many matches under his belt in pre-season, and thus delay the true reveal? Does he start with Cech and tell Courtois he must win the starting place? Does he start Courtois and thus likely hasten Cech's departure? From a footballing perspective, it is my opinion that Cech is still a perfectly good keeper, and is the tried and true option. Yes, Courtois has proven himself at Atletico, but the EPL is a different beast, and he will need time to settle in. While his promise is apparent, I wouldn't say he is the better option at this immediate point in time. If Jose decides to go with him, I believe it will be down to a fear of losing him, and the long-term stability he would bring to the club. This is going to be a huge decision. Second is the right back/ left back decision. The club spent a significant amount of cash on a new left back in Felipe Luis, the kind of cash you don't normally shell out for a substitute. However, Azpilicueta put nary a foot wrong last season (one of the standout performers, in fact) and Ivanovic is another tried and true performer for Chelsea, and still in the peak of his powers with superb aerial ability that is a weapon from set pieces. I'm thinking this is going to be more tactics-related, i.e. use Brana for the bruising sides and Azpi for when we need to stretch the field and put in crosses, which is definitely not Brana's strong suit. Still, first day of the season and all that, I think Jose has to go the tried and true route and select Brana and Azpi as the RB/LB combination. Another big decision. My personal choice for starters is: Cech, Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Terry, Fabregas, Matic, Hazard, Oscar, Willian, Costa, with the substitutes being: Courtois, Zouma, Luis, Ramires, Salah, Schurrle, Torres. To be honest, I'd keep Mikel and Lamps. I'd keep Schwarzer too if we decided to loan Courtois to Atletico for another season (but I would like to see both Cech and Courtois here at Chelsea next season fighting for a starting place). Players that I think we could do without are: Ramires (great work ethic but very, very limited as a footballer), Torres (sorry, but one day we need to come to our senses), and Ba (we don't play to his strengths). We don't have anyone in our academy that are at the same level of development of Shaw or Barkley. I see some promise in the likes of Izzy Brown and Lewis Baker, of course, but they are not ready. Shaw and Barkley are ready to play in the first team, provided they are on-form. I can't see anyone in our academy that are ready. Don't get me wrong, our academy has flourished into something I am darned proud of today, and I can see a few players (including the aforementioned) actually developing into Chelsea players in the next 4-5 years, something I wouldn't have dared say a mere 2-3 years ago. What I like about Shaw, apart from the usual benefits of having an English player, is his crossing ability from the left flank. I wish we had even one wide player who could cross a ball. I'm sure any of our strikers would say the same. It's quite pathetic, really, particularly in the EPL. The day Shaw signs for any other English club will be a sad day for me, even though I readily admit 30M is obscene. Cheers, Butch

I'd support Chelsea's signing of Shaw for 30 M, provided we have the flexibility under the FFP. This would be a long-term signing, and thus the pay back also has to be assessed long-term. I know it is not a priority position that needs to be strengthened (although having a full back that can cross a ball is something we've been crying out for for ages!), but I still would love us to sign him. Absolutely loathed him at Le Arse. Couldn't believe when Jose and Kenyon were rumored to have tapped him up at a posh London restaurant. Couldn't believe it when he signed. Took a while to win me over, but boy has he ever! Dependable as you like. Clearances off the goal line galore. So natural on Terry's left that you'd think they were somehow connected. Can't praise him enough, really. I only hope upon hope he ends up going to Real Madrid. I think Carlo rates him highly. Would be an awful sight to see him at either of the red teams. Cheers, Butch

In very general terms, you manage the team according to players at your disposal. When Jose arrived, I'm sure he knew where our problems were right away: leaky defense and misfiring forwards. And thus his comments about us not being serious challengers this season, and not wavering from that party line all season. He certainly solved our defensive woes, in the process retransforming John Terry into one of the standout defenders of the season (along with Cahill) after he had lost his way a little in recent seasons. The striking situation is not an easy one to fix. Clearly, new better players are needed, in probably the most expensive position in terms of the market. True, he may have been playing the impossible game with Rooney, but I think it is clear the players he wanted weren't available at the time. Looks like the problem, confirmed during the season, will be fixed this summer. In terms of the ability to assess a player's merits and how well they would fit into Chelsea and Jose's system, there is no one on the same planet as Jose. As such, I don't think to criticize him there, whether it be in relation to Mata or anyone else. Nothing is ever as simple as it looks. As for the off the field incidents, he is Jose Mourinho. He has his uniqueness. While I have to admit it is distracting at times, I don't really mind it in the big picture of things. Referees and linesmen get away with too much. As long as he understands he will have to pay any fines out of his own pocket, I think he is old enough to do what he wants. By the way, being fined for a sarcastic comment is just ludicrous, absolutely ridiculous. We're just one short step away from being fined for slanderous thoughts. This is the first summer in a long time that I don't worry about Chelsea in the least. We will get a few players Jose wants and will challenge from the get go next season.
