ESC 2009

The Moos

Recommended Posts

Yes, yes, I know it's like two months or so left until the semifinals take place but I am bored so I'll make a topic about this already. Anyway, gives us time to talk about all the songs (though not all are decided yet).

I can't be the only one here who are completely bonkers about the Eurovision Song Contest? Not the only one here who sit year after year and watch every single show about the ESC - the swedish qualifications, the pre-shows, the semifinals and then of course the final.

Not the only one who year after year swear that "I will never watch this c*ap again!" and still end up doing it the next year?

So, what do you think about this years songs?

I've heard the songs from UK and Ireland and they aren't that bad.

P.S. The singer in the song from Belarus makes me laugh :)

Oh Moos, I hang my head in shame! I had to open the thread to find out what ESC was! I am such an old fuddy-duddy. But I did watch last year's and it was so awful it was great! So I'll probably watch again this year, unless I get a better offer on the night!

Yes, last year had some really bad songs. That turkey from Ireland and then there were some pirates from another country.

Some songs was so bad they were actually good. Songs like "O Julissi" and "Pokusaj".

You could say that last years competition was mostly made out of bad songs and half naked women.

Hopefully this year will be better.

But no matter how bad it will get I will still be watching it, no matter how good an offer I get on that night ;)

P.S. Not knowing what ESC stand for :o Shame on you :sign0195:

Just thought I'd ask how you all chose the song and artist who shall represent your country in the final? I bet different countries have different methods. I think some even have a song and then there's different artists who compete to sing it (or was it the other way around?).

In Sweden things have really started to get out of control. Years ago we had one show where like 16 artists competed with their songs. Simple and it worked.

Now we have changed things....and this year has gotten even more complicated/irritating.

First we have 4 semifinals where a total of 32 artists compete (8 each saturday).

In each semifinal 2 artists goes through to the final and 2 goes to something that's called "Second Chance".

The "Second Chance" takes place after all the semifinals when there will be 8 artists in the Final and 8 in the "Second Chance". All artists are paired up in "Duels". The winner in Duel 1 then faces the winner in Duel 2 and the winner of Duel 3 takes on winner of Duel 4. The two who wins those two Duels will go through to the Final.

This has caused some complains because two great songs might face eachother immediately and then one will be knocked out. Instead we might get an inferior song reaching the final. For instance, in this years Second Chance (takes place saturday, tonight in other words) there will be 4 popular songs competing against eachother in Duel 1 and 2 while in Duel 3 and 4 there will be rather bad songs. So only one of the 4 popular ones will go through and then there will be one bad song going to the final too. It's just wrong, but there you are. Apparently the people in charge of the swedish qualifications for the ESC refuse to change anything. Bl**dy :w**k2:

But wait, there's more. This year we also have a "International Jury" and unless I'm mistaking that jury is made up by 10 people from different countries in Europe. They also pick one artist/song from each week, though not a song who have already reached the Final (but the ones in "Second Chance" is okay).

From those four songs they will then pick one final artist/song that will reach the Final.

So all in all we'll have 8 songs from semifinals. 8 songs from the "Second Chance" and one from that international jury.

11 artists/songs in total.

So it takes us 6 weeks to get our winner.

Want some more information?

Well, in every semifinal there's also duels!

After the 8 songs have been performed the people (us swedes) can vote on our favourites and then the 5 best gets picked to go through to the 2nd round of that semifinal. Then they pick 2 songs (can't remember if we vote again here) that will face off in a duel - the winner goes to the Final and the loser goes to the "Second Chance".

Then two more songs get to compete against eachother and the 5th song is eliminated, unless of course that song is the choice of the international jury, then it'll get another chance later on.

The idea of the international jury is that we'll get some voices from outside Sweden because we've noticed that sometimes the songs we like doesn't do well in Europe (just look at last year when we thought we had a great song and it finished at the bottom). The problem is that first of all the international jury doesn't base their decision on the performances in the semifinals, they base it on the rehearsals, which kinda sucks to be honest (the artists think the same).

Also, out of the 4 songs they've chosen so far 2 have been crap, 1 decent and only one have been really good.

Maybe they're right but I think they're out of their minds. I mean, one of the songs they've picked is just awful and I can't imagine people outside Sweden liking it.

Oh well, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe we're all wrong.

Saturday night I'm gonna sit and hold my thumbs for a song called "Movin on" which was a huge favourite to go through to the final but amazingly didn't and had to settle for "Second Chance" instead. I really hope it'll make it through to the final. Just a bit worried about the health of the singer. She's been really ill and have been able to sing all week. I really hope she'll be ready to sing and do it well. Earlier there was one who was sick and her voice really suffered and she was eliminated. Poor girl.

Anyway, this is the song "Movin On" which I hope will go through to the final:

I think they used a very similiar system here in Finland. Although I'm not 100% sure as I didn't watch any of the semifinals or finals. I've heard some of the preselected songs and as usual they've been ranging from tolerable to VERY bad. I know our entry this year is VERY bad:

I think this one came second in the final:

I think that would have been an improvement. At least it's something a bit different.

I've heard that first one. Not that bad in my oppinion, but not the best. Bring back Lordi :D

That other one was kinda good too. That sign language thing makes me think of that song from Latvia 2005 with Walter & Kazha. I really liked that song and they used sign language which was really cool.

One thing I've learned is that listening to a song and seing it being performed on stage is two different things. The song representing Finland might be okay when you listen to it here but it might be great on the stage. One of the songs in Sweden didn't sound that good when i first heard it but when they played it on stage it was great. It's one of my favourites now :P

P.S. "Movin On" went through to the final round in Sweden. Unfortunately a bad song went through too and it seems like it's the favourite to win here. Please God NO! :)

FOr the life of me I can't understand why anyone can sit through the Eurovision song contest - I can never buy into the 'it's so bad its great' argument. If I wanted to spend an evening listening to terrible music I would put on The Pet Shop Boys back catalogue. There is a very good, and obvious, reason why I don't do that and it is the same reason I'd rather eat Pauly's dad's soup than watch Eurovision.

And here was I hoping we all could have a piss up in Moscow when it's time for the big final :D

Yesterday we (Sweden that it) finally chose the song which will represent us in Moscow. The final here was really exciting and points were handed out to basically everyone. The highest score (12 points) were actually given to 8 out of 11 songs, which have to be some kind of a record.

The song that won was one of the favourites to win and most people here in Sweden seems to think that it is the song most likely to do well in the ESC. But up until the very end the song was only in 8th position out of 11 songs and therefore I thought it wouldn't have a chance. But when the last votes was handed in it went from 8th place to the top and won. You can imagine how surprised the winner was.

Anyway, it might not be my favourite song but I like it anyway and I think it might actually stand a chance in Moscow.

Here it is (play it in HQ):

Been sitting and watching performances from the swedish final and I have to say that I wish this song had win (though I like the one that won too).

Play it in HQ

I've also been listening to some of the other countries entries. Don't know why, but I really like Norways entry (play it in HQ).

I am sure many will watch it Moosie, just not sure many will admit to it.

I would have no problem admitting it if I was going to watch it, but at the moment I've got many other things I'd rather do and some other things that I must do, so it looks very unlikely that I'll watch it.

OK! I'm watching it because I couldnt bear to think of Moos being the only Shed Ender to watch it: but so far its been pretty forgettable except for Greece and that was only because of the very beautiful young man in white
