A bit of Madness with ‘One Step Beyond.’

Piggybacking with a cover of summer in the city by legendary Estonian singer Jaak Joala. While this was recorded in the early 90´s when Estonia had just gained re-independence from the soviet union it epitomizes the pop-music of the decades preceding it where western culture and music were banned. Luckily due to the proximity of Finland, just 80km over the Gulf of Finland, many people managed to smuggle in western vinyl records which then became a hot commodity in undeground movements. Many of the artists of the time exhanged records of Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc. (usually only a few copies existed in the country at any time) and mimicked their style which to the general population sounded like magic. Of course most of them were simply knock-offs but they are deeply embedded in the culture and represent an interesting paradox of the time.

Plenty of musical talent from Scotland. David Byrne was born in Scotland, John Martyn had a Scottish dad, Rod Stewart always identified as Scottish . . .i just saw 3 bus loads of ‘Allys Army” leave for Boston. Bless ‘em. All day drinking in the 90 degree heat and then the game at 9pm and none of them looked like they had packed any sunscreen.

Mark knopfler, Iain Anderson, Donovan, Angus Young, Bobby Gillespie, Ivor Cutler, Bronski Beat, the Cocteau Twins, Annie Lennox, the skids, big country, the waterboys. . .etc, etc.

But where would they all be without these blokes. . .
