I'm looking to head up to Glasgow to catch the Aberdeen match next month with a mate of mine. I have never been to Ibrox before and wanted some recommendations as to which stand the ones who have made the trip might recommend. I sit in MH lower at The Bridge so I guess I am looking for a bit of atmosphere (singing etc.) Cheers.

oh dear. It's hard to know where to start with that. All I will say is how many times have you been to ibrox? How many gers fans do you know? I'm not naive enough to dismiss what you say as total rubbish because of course you can't deny the religious aspect of it all and what that can bring but to dismiss and tar Scottish football and indeed a great famous club such as Rangers so unannimously is plain wrong. If someone follows a team because they have a religious connection to them that does not mean they are sectarian unless they choose to practise sectarianism itself.

I'd have a rethink if I was you before making sweeping statements like your last line.

Bmwdmb, you will have a great time mate wherever you sit. I'm sure you will be blown away by the passion and fever. It's a different world up there football wise. It means everything up there, as I'm sure you will find out in the boozers on the Paisley rd west!

Anywhere that's not amongst the Aberdeen fans. Great game to go to, Ranger's biggest rivalry outside of the obvious Celtic one.

As for the "the majority of Rangers and Celtic fans are sectarians" can't agree with that at all.

As for Scottish football being Grim....that is true. But with the rivalry in this game, it should be a good one. I'd also say on Paisley Rd West you'd be very welcomed in a Chelsea top.

I have been to Ibrox 4 times actually. My uncle took me when I was younger in the Mark Hately and Ally McCoist days, he is a massive fan. It's not for me.

Maybe you don't see it as much in England, but virtually all Rangers and Celtic fans I know over here are bitter in some shape or form. They try to patch it up as if its football rivalry, but its pretty much based on a religion if you ask me...all stems from that. You never see a catholic rangers fan, the same goes for a protestant celtic fan..

If you see a fella walking down the road in a ranger or celtic top, I would say 8 times out of 10 he will be a chav, trouble maker, etc..Thats how they are viewed here by a lot of people.

A man walking in the wrong part of belfast with a rangers or celtic top on could easily get lynched.

I know a lot of both, and most of them aren't the brightest spark.

I have many close friends who are Rangers fans who would be very offended to hear what you are saying.

Having lived in Ireland myself and having been to Belfast, many , many times i would accept that there may be far more of an issue across the the water for obvious reasons, however i still think you are making a ridiculous generalisation.

My mates who are Rangers fans who would be very devastated to hear what you are saying and im almost offended on behalf of them. The idea of sectarianism makes them as sick as most people (as much as they know it goes on)

And as for your scenario - If a man walked around the wrong area of Belfast or indeed Glasgow with the wrong football top on you would think he is either a:stupid or b: looking for trouble, in which case he gets everything he deserves.

Still you could say the same about parts of Manchester, London,Birmingham or Sheffield! That hints at a problem with society more than anything. Though in those two cities above the religious aspect certainly adds to the tension.

I take your points lads, I know I am generalising quite a bit, but still, I am saying what I see from my own experiences.

Clearly you can speak about the situation in Belfast situation in an informed manner and I wouldn’t begin to challenge you on that. However I have lived in, or around, Glasgow on and off for the best part of 20 years and I never agree with any kind of sweeping accusation of sectarianism in either set of fans of the Old Firm (does anyone call it the Auld Firm anymore?).

Clearly there are some however over the years I have met thousands of fans of both sides (everything from being good mates to meeting in passing in the pub) and I would say only a very small percentage gave off any kind of hint that they were sectarian in any way.

As BJD says there are a lot who purely support the team because of their religion but that is a country mile from being sectarian. I will grant you that until UEFA cracked down on it you could listen to the crowd at Ibrox and Celtic Park and it would appear that there were thousands of bigots but like a lot of football grounds there are a large number who sing the songs because they are the songs they have always heard at the stadium and not for any other reason. I used to go to Ibrox as a kid and see 8 year olds singing about King Billy or mocking Bobby Sands and they obviously hadn’t a clue what they were singing about – 20 years later they were probably still singing the same songs but I would call most of them idiots, not sectarian.

I actually think both clubs are now doing as much as they probably can to cast off the sectarian cloud that has hung over them for far too long. I would say Celtic probably moved on it earlier and more determinedly than Rangers did however they are both now in a much better place and long may that continue.

You are right though – it is bloody grim! David Weir still plays week in week out!!

Mate, no point going up any more, we failed to beat Dundee Utd yesterday in the Scottish Cup and the replay is replayed, when we're suppose to play Aberdeen at home on the 24th of this month.

If your looking for atmosphere at Ibrox, Broomloan next to The Blue Order in Broomloan Front Section 4 or up next to the Union Bears in Copland Rear Section 1. Both sets of supporters groups are a cracking bunch of lads.

All of the Rangers fans I know are not chavs, there are trouble makers obviously, I'm sure there are Chelsea fans who go to the Bridge week in, week out that are trouble makers. I hate defending Celtic and there fans but all of my mates who support them are not chavs either.

Yea I saw that, unfortunately my mate and I already had our train tickets since we found some for cheap in advance so we are still heading up. Figure we will just catch the replay in a pub with some proper atmosphere (Annie Millers or The District have been recommended?) and just go take a look at Ibrox during day. For what its worth we had tickets right next to the Blue Order so I was looking forward to a good time, oh well.
