I don't think many people would disagree that their absence has been a major part of why we've been struggling recently, but my question is this:

They are both in their 30s now and probably haven't got that many seasons left in them...so what on earth are we going to do when they retire?

McEachran is the only player coming through at the moment who has a realistic chance of making it, but he's not really the box to box type general that Lampard is, and he certainly won't chip in with 20+ goals a season.

I'm struggling to see who we could bring through or who we could buy who could possibly replace them.

I know it's a few years off, and by then maybe some other decent players will have come through who we could look at bringing in, but it worries me that those 2 players seem to be so irreplaceable at the moment.

There is definitely no replacing Lampard, because he is a true legend and really cant be replaced. But in terms of replacing his influence in the middle I think we have that man in Essien. This is a player who, when fit and on form, can impact a match in so many ways, just like Frank, even without getting on the scoresheet. I know Essien is already 27 so he wont be around forever. But when Frank goes, Ess should be the midfield fulcrum.

In terms of the goals Frank brings, we are definitely going to have to find a new player to replace that aspect of his game. But preferrably I would like someone who can like Essien play with the same kind of freedom. Schweinsteiger, while maybe not the player, is the kind of player I am talking about. Or another Ballack (as if finding that is so easy) but someone who is a real box-to-box player, and is not afraid to get forward and shoot.

JT is a player we, again, cant replace, but can hope to replace his influence and impact. I would want a fearless, English/home nations CB who is still fairly young, but also has significant experience to come in in the next season or two and learn from JT for a few years. Man Utd did this by getting Smalling, and brining him in with Ferdinand and Vidic still there.

I know we should have more faith in Bruma, but Bruma is going to get his chance too. Thankfully, Ivan and Alex are still 26/27 so we have several more years of them as first choice pairing. Considering what they cost they club they have been fantastic buys, and a model for future transfers.

Lampard is irreplaceable. Maybe we should try Dzagoev who has a game similar to frank's.

JT is more replaceable, but its still extremely hard nonetheless.

Both of them will be missed.

P.S. Don't forget Drogba and Essien as well.

I think the club should look for replacement for the 2 players next season, especially for Lampard. Ideally we get a 25 year old, e.g. Hamsik, give him a year to establish in the team and learn the trade from Frank, then slowly take over in 2 years time. It is easier say than done through, this isn't FM. I think Essien is the different type of player to Lampard, we need someone who is creative and can score 15 goals a year. In JT's case, he can go on for another 5 years, and a fully fit Alex Ivanoic parternship actually do a pretty good job.

we either replace a player like lampard or change the way we play . There is not another lampard at the moment is my opinion , so we got to look at changing the way we play with creative midfielders who can pick the forwards , box to box midfielders who can support the attacking midfielders .

Terry is irreplaceable for the simple reason that you don't get to see too many committed CBs as good as him . May be Puyol is one example ... Carragher is also committed but not as good as Terry . So we need a CB who will be the future of the club and take chelsea into his stride ... Phil Jones comes to my mind !

Disagree with that. Lampard is a super player, but JT is the leader of the team, replacing him will be hard.

I don't see anyone out there at the moment fit to replace Lampard, but he's got at least a season or two left. Drogba replacement is out there already, Lukaka.

Even though Lukaka can be looked upon as replacement of Drogba ...its not gonna be easy to get him .....he is already a hot talent in market with not just English teams but also Spanish teams already showing interest in this deal.

This would definitely increase the price Tag on the tough fella and wont suit the budget restrictions that we have been following in transfer market lately .

Though we can bank something upon the fact that he is been reckoned as a Great Drogba fan ...so he might want to join his idol at Bridge ;)

when lamps hangs up his boots he will be missed not only as a player but a huge influence in the team, these types of player's don't come along every day he is a phenomenom a free scoring midfeild general that is a true blue legand i think we'll get a couple more good full seasons out of super frank and hopefully becomes invoved in coaching when he does retire, people dont need to panic the way some of you are talking we need a replacement straight away lol, by the time frank retires the likes of essien will step into that attacking position and when he retires we'll (fingers crossed) will have a host of youngsters that will have been learning off our superstars for years and be able to handle the pressure and step into a legends boots.

terry is mr chelsea, a true legend who puts his body on the line everytime he pulls on the shirt whether is blue or white. he is the voice in the dressing room and on the pitch, he drives players and in my opinion a true captain and the best we have ever seen, think about it when terry is absent we struggle and england derailed when stripped of the captaincy. imo terry is the hardest of the 2 to replace, we will never again have a player like him so we need to cherrish every min this man is still here because when he retires we will be left with a hole almost impossible to fill.

I really do not think there is any player out there who like Lampard can score loads of goals from midfield. Replacing him is going to be extremely hard. We will need to spend quite a bit of money to get a half decent replacement from him. But he really is irreplaceable.

JT can be replaced a lot easier than Lampard. I mean we can replace him with somebody who has the same if not more ability but his leadership qualities are where it will be hard to find a replacement.

You could throw in Malouda, Cole, Anelka, Drogba and Essein. I don't think its as bleak as people make it appear.

I believe that Ramires could cover Essein well, its only been a few games and even though the signs aren't promising, I think he could be a good replacement.

Kakuta could make the left wing position his own in the next 2-3 years, same with Sturridge in the "anelka role".

PVA looks good to take over from Cole.

Only areas of concern include a good key foward who could take over from Drogba.

I'd say Lampard and Drogba are (perhaps our only) fast thinkers. They can play the killer ball in tight situations, which is what we've been lacking in the last few games. We're doing the right things, but too slowly, and too predictably. I have to say Josh looks to be our best bet in that department.

Have to agree that JT is going to be replaced a lot easier then Lampard.

JT is our leader but his defensive abilities are far from irreplaceable especially because he is on the decline for some time now.
