How Good Was the League This Season?

Featured Replies

Are they waiting for Pep though?

I can't see any agreement being made as both Bayern and City would be in effect writing off next season as their managers heads would be elsewhere...that aint going to happen at this level.

In the event it's based on hope then what is to say pep won't stay at Bayern or even go back to Barca? Waiting for him could easily come to nothing and again a wasted season.

I don't buy it.

You say that but Pellegrini has been in this league two seasons and won the same amount of trophies Wenger had at that point.

The fact is he doesn't deserve to be sacked, how can someone deserve to be sacked when he won a double last season? Sorry but that's pure sh*t and sounds like stuff spoiled fans say.

Maybe I'm a spoiled fan, or maybe I'm not as accepting of failure as some might be.

If the guy they wanted was available, he'd be out the door. Yes? So you're keeping someone around who you would sack in other circumstances and saying he doesn't deserved to be sacked?

By every measure City have regressed, except maybe the CL. They've got fewer points than last season and many individuals are underperforming. That's why City will further decline next year.

Are they waiting for Pep though?

Yes. Anyone who seriously thinks they're sticking with Pellegrini because a club with their expectations genuinely thinks they believe he's the man to take them forward from this position...I mean I'm sure some people do think that, but come on.

You don't know that though, not for sure anyway. It's guess work. You have basically plucked all your belief on this from the media...who also got it wrong thinking he'd leave this season.

Think about it, why would City a club who crave to be the leading club in England and Europe want to continue with a man that can't take them forward?

Then you go to Bayern, why would they stick with Pep knowing he was about to leave them? If any agreement was made then why risk keeping someone who's mind is clearly elsewhere.

What evidence are people basing the notion that City are waiting for Pep on?

Is there actually anything to go on other than paper talk?

Has Pep expressed any interest what so ever in the City job?

Could happen, but the suggestion that City are basically 100% waiting on pep and making all their moves so as to not 'put Pep off' sounds a bit far fetched to me.

Exactly.

Because the man they want isn't available and was apparently put off joining us because he thought we were too trigger-happy. Or maybe he just wants diminished expectations.

He has a three year contract and next year it's up. If he signs an extension (how often do top clubs allow a manager to enter their final year of a contract? Not often) then we'll know.

Pellegrini is also entering his final year. Maybe they'll extend his contract because they're a club who crave to be the leading club in England and Europe and want to continue with a man who can take them forward.

It's all based on conjure though through guesses and personal opinions in the press.

Nothing from City.

Nothing from Bayern.

Nothing from either manager.

It like mclovin said is pretty far fetched.

It would be a very dangerous game for a club to be holding off for a whole season on the assumption one manager may or may not be available. Would City and their owners risk another season of nothing on one man?

I highly doubt it.

So you want City to come out and say that they're going to sack their current manager a year from now? That would undermine him a tad wouldn't it? Or you want Pep to come out and say he's going to Manchester in a year? Again, undermines his position in the locker room doesn't it?

Instead you have City sticking with a manager who has actually seen them regress in the league whilst losing the dressing room but NOT extending his contract.

We'll see in a year, but if City were looking to get Guardiola then they're doing everything right. What's interesting will be their transfer dealings in the summer.

They may or may not get him.

I find it hard to believe that the moves they are making just now is because they believe that will happen.

If they are then they are mugs tbh.

What's crucial beyond everything else is that Arsenal don't get Cech and United don't get Bale.

If those things are avoided I think we will be just fine next season.

Why's it so hard to believe? We did it.

Obviously the English teams have suffered in Europe this season and my personal view is that the league has steadily declined in quality since 2008 when we had 2 English teams in the CL Final and 3 in the semis.

But both Arsenal and City can finish as our closest rivals with the same number of points - 79.

Last year that would'd been good enough for 4th (funnily enough, that was Arsenal who a year on could finish on EXACTLY the same number of points....mucho improvement).

It would've been good enough for second in 2012-13, the last United win under Fergie which I think is widely regarded as the worst team to win the league and 2010/11 where we came second and Carlo was deservedly sacked having lost 9 games.

In 2008 it would've been good enough for fourth, six points behind us in second.

You'd have to go back to 2003/04 for it to be good enough for second...and that was us and guess what happened to our manager. Poor Claudio.

I'm not trying to diminish our achievements, but I'm just looking at our Championship in context. We've been the best team in the league over the course of a season and that's all you have to be to win the league. But how good was our competition this season? Where do they rank in the history of the league and where does this team rank?

Does doing well in Europe constitute a good league? We won the competition despite finishing a lowly 6th, the Scouse won it but in the league finished 37pts behind us. United did the treble in '99 finishing first in the league on 79pts. Looking further back to '92 (when football was invented)  Utd won it on 84 but Palace got relegated on 49. All the stats really say is the best side in the league won it in any particular year, comparing is relatively pointless , the records either degrading or elevating a teams performance in the minds of the fans.

Why's it so hard to believe? We did it.

Yes we did it.

Because our owner had a friendly relationship with Jose who he worked with for 3 years and kept up communication afterwards.

He was a former manager and a fan favourite who many times communicated his desire to come back to England and manage us again one day.

This is night and day from City and Pep, so yes it’s hard to believe IMO.

Not on it's own but I think it can provide some context to the larger point I was getting at. In 2008 I think it's fair to say that the league was at it's strongest and both our's and United's teams from that year were better than anything in the league this year. Champions League progression was something that came with having that quality of play.

This year we were eliminated by a PSG team who were then decimated by Barcelona who are probably the best team in the world right now, with Madrid and Bayern close behind. I think that's a fair pointer to how far behind the top teams we currently are and also the relative strengths of the league, at least at the top of the table.

I was talking about how we went after Pep, not Jose.

Going after Pep was what led us to ending up with Rafa because we hired a coach who simply wasn't good enough for us to win the league `(Robbie).

The other reason I don't think City will stick with Pellegrini is that we're not that lucky. There's no way a rival would actually stick with a guy who clearly isn't good enough is there? Yes he won the league in his first season but this season they've been one-dimensional and divided amongst themselves.

I hope I'm wrong and he stays for the next few seasons.

Did you think Ancelotti should have been sacked in 10-11 out of interest?

I think sacking a manager for coming second a year a sesson after winning two trophies is ridiculous to be honest.

I also think writing off a team that have won trophies in recent years because of a trophy less season is ludicrous.

What evidence are people basing the notion that City are waiting for Pep on?

Media speculation is the answer to all

Personally I don’t think sacking him is the deserved outcome based on last season and the fact they are still second as things stand, you can’t win it every year!

However we know what football is like especially at the top of the game with foreign owners…it’s a case of instant success or we move on and find a new guy who is flavour of the month.

Imagine we sacked Jose after last season? We wouldn’t be double winners with games to spare that’s for sure!

I’m not saying Peligrini will do the same but it’s worth noting. Another year at it is a fair crack I think but wouldn’t be shocked to see him sacked but that’s mainly down to how the game is these days, managers get hardly any time when things get a bit shaky.

I think it's hard to keep a job when you end a season with 15 less points, 34 less goals scored, 6 less victories and 3 more defeats, whilst also only marginally improving in Europe. I do think there were other issues at play but I don't think any managers who have that decline in the space of 12 months can have many complaints and that isn't even discussing the football we were playing.

You may think it's ridiculous, but it's the reality of football. You may also think it's ludicrous to write them off, but I'm not writing off the players. I'm writing off these players under this manager. Kompany's a good player for instance, but under Pellegrini he's looked a shadow of himself and the same could be said for a few other players this year.

Imagine we sacked Jose after last season? We wouldn’t be double winners with games to spare that’s for sure!

And that's the point. Last season we showed progression. You could point to specific areas where we were lacking and the club backed the manager to fill those spots.

What exactly are we pinpointing as the problem at City? To me it's a system issue and he's been found out by almost every top manager he's faced. It's not like they just need a Costa or a Fabregas. To me they need new ideas.

They were only a few points off us not that long ago remember, it's not like they are 5 or 6th in the league.

For me it's midfield they need to address more than any other area. Toure has been posted missing all season long and compared to last season it’s night and day. There has been talk of Pogba or someone but not sure who could fill that gap.

Goal scoring wise they are the best in the league because of Sergio and I don’t see that changing much.

A centre back would also be required ideally for them.

It’s not a whole new squad anyway just a few players and they are absolutely good enough to challenge for the title next season.

And Arsenal would've won the league if it ran from January to now. That's now how leagues work though.

I agree. I also think Fernando has been a flop, Fernandinho's form has severely dropped off and Lampard and Milner are leaving. But apart from those five I think they're pretty much set.

Fingers crossed he doesn't get injured.

A centre back would also be required ideally for them.

Ideally yes, because Kompany has had his worst season ever, Demichelis is going to be 35 yet is still their best defender on form and Mangala has yet to live up to his price tag.

The issue is still whose system are they looking to buy players for though? Pellegrini's one that has been sussed by a lot of teams or some broader system that a new manager can use?

As it is I don't think they will seriously challenge for the title because I don't think they'll back their manager to do so.

You didn't answer my question though, did you think Carlo deserved the sack in 2010-11 even though we'd won the double in 2009-10?

It is ridiculous and a I know this is modern day football but what I find utterly ridiculous is that you would say he deserves to be sacked. You know better, you're a football fan not a member of the Man City board.

Indeed but for the majority of the season they have been in touching distance of us which to me indicates they don’t require THAT much of a rebuild but rather a few tweaks here and there.

Kompany is a funny one.

Looked world class the season they won it the first time around then since then his form has gone up and down and there’s been no consistency. Is it due to not having a regular partner beside him who he fully trusts? Not sure but there’s a real player in there somewhere but he’s probably in the last chance saloon before they look at a replacement rather than a partner.

Sergio going by his latest interview looks to be over his injuries because of a change of diet (same guy Messi went to) his only injury this season was unrelated to his niggling ones last season he said. Not sure if that’s 100% the case but interesting none the less.

In many ways they are looking for a player similar to what we may be looking for, a box to box midfielder who can chip in with goals….Those types are few and far between today though.

I was talking about how we went after Pep, not Jose.

I don't really buy we did this. You keep saying it like we did, but I doubt it. Waiting for Jose maybe. Not pep. No ways we held off for pep then somehow get Jose in the 11th hour. He would have been approached and dealt with months in advance.

Di Matteo winning the CL also made it impossible to not give him a go. Least he deserved.
