All-Time Chelsea Players Draft Game

Featured Replies

Not sure who you're talking about Barak, besides i've had my last pick planned for quite a while now.

With Torres and Okocha available off the bench i've got plenty of emergency firepower and flair, so my final sub spot goes to the master of defending a lead, the man who has inspired and dazzled fans from around the world, in fact that a man who once came 2nd to Lionel Messi in u20 World Cup player of the tournament voting is still available at the final pick is downright insulting.

Not to mention he has the ability to score when he wants.

So with the final pick of the shed end all-time premier league draft, I choose...

So how we going to do this, have all 4 games played at the time to avoid this dragging too much and people losing interest?

I think that was the issue the last time we played is that the games themselves were taking too long.

Alright if you guys think we can manage it.

I think that was the issue the last time we played is that the games themselves were taking too long.

We also had lots of people disappearing at random times, and hardly anyone was voting so we had to extend it to three days, etc. But you did give me a vote in the 2014 Shed End Oscars, so we'll try this out.

We'll wait until all eight of us are ready with our team selections plus write-ups (which you can either PM or post in here) and we'll start the threads up ASAP.

The tactics are pretty obvious. A 4-3-3 with stunning pace and trickery on the wings with the dream combo of Ronaldo and Hazard. They will be free to do their thing thanks to my solid back 4 shielded by my balanced midfield 3. Mascherano sits back allowing Essien to charge box-to-box all day, leaving Fabregas to dictate play and ping through balls to my front 3.

The back 4 is being marshaled by the great Marcel Desailly and has no real weaknesses. I have two of the best attacking fullbacks the premier league has seen in Evra and Zabaleta, who will be able to get forward in support, with Mascherano and Essien plugging the gaps.

And finally, if anything manages to get through, I have Tibo Courtois in goal to deal with it.

On my bench are Damien Duff and Nicolas Anelka to give me some tactical flexibility and David Luiz for keeping team spirits high.

Bench: Fernando Torres, Jay Jay Okocha, Jon Obi Mikel

Short summary: Best striker, best support strikers, best holding midfielder, best bench impact player and best goalkeeper in the competition.

So the formation is the 'christmas tree' 4-3-2-1, favored by Carlo Ancelotti's AC Milan side that won 2 champions league titles and a Serie A. Spearheading the attack is the greatest striker and arguably greatest player in premier league history, Thierry Henry. He will be supported by two other all-time greats in Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney. Really the 3 of them need no further elaboration.

The midfield is anchored by none other than Claude Makelele himself, demi-god of the defensive midfield position. He's accompanied by his former Chelsea teammate Michael Ballack, one of the most complete midfielders in PL history, who will be doing most of the leg work in midfield as he loves to do. The final midfield role is occupied by Juninho, who brings the unpredictable and who is given more of a free role in comparison to the other two. Any defensive deficiencies he has should be more than made up by the leg work of Rooney who has turned himself in to a box-to-box second striker in recent years, not to mention Makelele and Ballack.

If the opposition somehow gets past Makelele they'll have former Arsenal captain Tony Adams to deal with, partnered by Ledley King, a man Thierry Henry once referred to as the only defender in the world that can tackle him without fouling him. Paulo Ferreira and Le Saux offer a relatively conservative mix of defensive solidarity while still possessing the ability to get forward and add width.

Between the sticks is the finest PL goalkeeper ever, Peter Schmeichel.

As for the bench - Fernando Torres was once actually one of the worlds best players, as difficult as it is to remember, and is by some distance the best impact bench player on any team in this competition. Jay Jay Okocha is available if more width is required or as a wild card to shake up a stern defence.

Finally, once we get the inevitable 1-0 lead, be it through Henry, Cantona, Rooney, Ballack, Juninho or Torres, I will channel my inner Mourinho and bring on Jon Obi Mikel to see out the victory.

Simples.

Mikel did it for me, not the other 10 cart horses :)

My squad starts with one if the most respected goalkeepers in Premier League history. His trophy haul at Man Utd speaks for itself: Dutch most capped player, 2 Champions Leagues (one for Ajax), 4 Premier League and 4x Premier League team of the year.

My Fullbacks are Jose's current first choice in the league's best defence, Ivan & Dave.

My centre halves: Gary Pallister was Alex Ferguson's first choice centre half until he (Pallister) retired, collecting (amongst other things) 4 league titles. Frank Leboeuf was Chelsea's centre half in the period before Roman Abramovich took over. Not only a 'world cup winning' international, but a great penalty taker and long range passer. He also had another trick up his sleeve. He's famed for the "air card", so elbowing strikers like Shearer or the stamping Aguero's (of this world), may not get away with such shenanigans, as our Frank will certainly bring such things to the referees attention :)

Protecting my back 4 is Man Utd's Daley Blind, who was one of Van Gaal's signings that had a good season.

Up front I have Andy Cole, with 5 League titles and a Champions League amongst other things, his record is near to 1 goal every 2 games.

Behind, and around Andy Cole I have 4 fantastic flair players: Joe Cole, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata, Gianfranco Zola. There's enough here to bamboozle any defence. They will inter-change their positions to further confuse any man-markers.

Joe Cole won 3 Premier League titles with Chelsea after Claudio Ranieri brought him in to replace Gianfranco. A fans favourite with Jose teaching him a complete game. Alexis Sanchez has proved himself a right handful since signing for Arsenal. 2x Chelsea player of the year Juan Mata will take some of the corners and occasionally the odd free kick. I leave my best player to the end. Gianfranco Zola!! Voted Chelsea's best ever player. Not only a Chelsea fan's favourite, but universally loved. Although he never win a Premier League, Roman Abramovich begged him to stay, but Gianfranco is an honourable man and couldn't go back on his word. Amongst his normal trickery, Gianfranco will take most of our free kicks. There has been nobody better.

My subs:

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - a proven instinctive goal scorer, with a frightening stare!

Dennis Wise - we might need to mix it up a bit. Dennis can mix it with the best, and a cheeky nip can get an opponent sent off. Also the kind of guy you need in the dressing room.

Jamie Carragher - normally wouldn't get a game on principle and would spend his time gazing at our trophy cabinet. However, he could be brought on if we're up against it, by putting him at Centre Half and moving Frank forward to support the back 4.

Nice write up's both of you.

One player I was surprised didn't get picked and thought would have fit NorthernMonkey's team is Gilberto Silva.

If I may suggest, it would be better putting Sanchez on the right, Mata on the left and Zola through the middle. Also, I'm surprised you've benched Wise for Joe Cole in midfield.

Keeping it old school with my team, good old 4-4-2 formation.

You've got to of the most prolific and deadly goalscorers in Premier League history leading the line in Shearer and Aguero, capable of creating a goal from almost nowhere, inside and out of the box.

In support you've got Steven Gerrard in the middle who assisted 99 goals in his time in the league and capable of popping up with goals from range too.

Robert Pires providing flair and width on the left, again not a bad goal scorer either, he averaged around a goal every three games for Arsenal and was of course an integral part of the invincible side.

On the right Ljunberg is doing a similar job but timing late runs into the area looking to pick up on through balls from Pires and Gerrard.

Meanwhile Ruud sits tight in the middle, majestically spraying God like passes around, keeping the side ticking over and retaining possession.

Nothing too much to say about the defence, in a very Mourinho like mind set they won't often venture forward, allowing the attacking players to do their jobs without having to worry too much about overlapping etc.

You've got the greatest centre back pairing the Premier League has ever seen in middle and contrary to Jonty's belief, I have the best Premier League keeper between the sticks (look at his clean sheet record, it tells its own story).

Basically good luck getting past those five.

On the bench I've got the option of bringing Alex on to go to a 3 man defence should it be needed and Michael Carrick would allow me to switch to a 4-3-3 formation should I want to put more pressure on the opposition full backs by pushing Pires and Ljunberg further forwards.

James Milner could come on and player wherever the hell I want and he would probably do it brilliantly too, maybe the best utility man the Premier League has ever seen.

In conclusion, you might as well name me the winner of this game now

Your image isn't coming up for me strangely, but it's alright if you can't get it to work, I have a good picture of your team from your description anyhow.

Just use this one.

Not sure how to Embed it so someone will have to help me out but you get the idea.

I'll start with the formation, I've gone for 4411 but because of the versatility of the players the formation can be changed to 352 4231 ect.. so lots of different options if it all went tits up in a game.

Cudicini in goal in his prime he was one of the best keepers in the league great reflexes and brilliant shot stopper.

Back four whilst not the biggest names around are as solid and as athletic as you like, I decided to bench Bruce for McGrath no particular reason other than he was more athletic than Bruce and with Gallas and Toure that is a formidable 3 with Petrescu bombing up and down the right hand side aswell.

Onto the Midfield I have Vieira and Lampard, Lampard going box to box popping up with those crucial goals and 30 yard screamers whilst Vieira would sit a little deeper but be given the license to power forward when he is being covered. Both have fantastic passing ability short or long and do their fair share off tracking back. David Silva on the right although he would be cutting in keeping the ball moving and getting into pockets of space behind the opposition midfield as he does so well and linking up play with the forwards.

Bale would be the pace merchant bombing up and down being given freedom by gallas to get forward as gallas will just defend, So it would Bale and Petrescu giving the width which can also be the case if changed to a 3 at the back with wingbacks.

Finally the strikers Bergkamp playing just behind Diego Costa linking up they would be the perfect match Costa always on the move making runs starting fights ect.. Bergkamp making space taking 2or3 defenders out of the game with deft touches and turns they would be a formidable partnership. Andddddd the bench Di Matteo to come on at certain moments if needed to solid things up or take 30 yard belters at goal, and Solskjaer to be super sub and bang in some goals if needing a goal.

My fingers are tired now.
