Watching Sir Bobby Charltons last game at Chelsea

Featured Replies

A really memorable game Chelsea v Man U.. seeing Sir Bobby and George Best play.. Chelsea won 1-0.. all the Chelsea fans applauded at the end of the match for Bobby. was any one else there to see it.

Quite a sore point that I missed this match as could not get to the ground early enough, was in the café at Bearman's the Harrods of east London listen on a radio.

Yes daft hair but great player and world cup winner for England!

Queued up from about 9 in the morning to get in the Shed, as you say, a memorable day for one of our national heroes. George Best didn't play though.

Remember that day. After the game usual Pilgrimage to Euston to say 'goodbye' to the Manc's!. Newcastle showed up mob handed, before going back to Kings Cross. They'd played at Tottenham, many of their mob wearing 'Alice Cooper' face make up!. Spurs also in attendance, ( Vic Donkin & friends ) bit like a 'roll call' of mobs.
Manchester always brought loads to London games then on 'Specials', always swarming about Euston like Ants. Back then, their speciality was wrecking trains, Underground etc, through strength by numbers.
Previous season Aug 71 went to see them in a pre season Saturday game at Fulham ( yep, that's right! ). Came out of Putney Bridge station, and a big mob of them had just trashed & ransacked a pub around the corner.
After game, on District Line tube, it pulled into Charing Cross ( I think ), and mob of around 100 Chelsea skins ( D.H. & co?) on other platform chanting 'Chelsea', as Tube was full of Manx!.
And for anyone into statistics, sure Fulham won 2-1!.

A bit old now...........

A bloke goes into a barbers, he's thin on top and asks for a Bobby Charlton.

Ten minutes later he is in distress as he sees his head has been shaved and his comb over has gone.

"What have you done! I asked for a Bobby Charlton."

"Yeah and that's what Bobby Charlton would have got if he came in here."

I was there that day. Twelve years old with a mate from school.

No change of getting in The Shed that day, so North Stand it was.

Dont remember it being a great game, it was more interesting watching the coming and goings around us.

I met Bobby Charlton in July 1977. My old man was really nervous , as Bobby was one of his footballing heroes which I remember finding funny at the time.

We got our photo taken with him and he was great, asking me if it was United or Liverpool who were my favourite English team ?

' Chelsea' I said . 'Good for you!' was his reply.

Nothing to do with his last game I openly admit...

Saw him play a few times but not that game.  Met him about 4 years ago at the Open golf and he stopped to let me take a picture with him for my friend. was very friendly and a little shorter than he seemed on the pitch.

I remember him being on a quiz program called Double Your Money and he answered questions on pop music. he got through to final where you were meant to go in a sound proof box (very dramatic) - but because of the trauma he had suffered in Munich air disaster he was allowed not to go in the box. He answered all the question and won the top prize ............£1000 ooooh.

I will never forget his goal against Mexico in '66 that got our world cup off and running - great player.
