Was changed awhile ago. In the old system the player had to pay their release clause, then recieve compensation from the buying club. That compensation was therefore treated as personal income and taxed at the top income tax rate.

Clubs have to pay 25% corporate tax on transfer profits. Spain changed the rules to allow exemptions for certain football clubs (no surprises who) but the EU ruled it as 'state aid', so now all clubs pay the same corporate tax rate.
