yogic
With all this speculation about Alves ... 'IF' we do indeed sign him ... whats going to happen with Jhonno and Ferreria? Ferreria lost his place last season to many players. Jhonno impressed at Pompey. Are we going to sell or loan out one of the two? Surely we wont start the season with 3 right backs!! abramovich
I said it many times and i'll say it again: i don't see the reasoning behind Glen Johnson comeback. He simply isn't good enough and a defensive liability on top of it. He doesn't look half bad going forward but he gets caught out of position constantly and isn't a very intelligent player in my opinion. If Jose is content with having an attacking fullback on the right who doesn't do much defensively then Alves fits the bill perfectly and he's much better player with the crossing ability that puts most, if not all Chelsea players to shame. BlueBeard
Jhonno impressed at Pompey I'm sorry, but no he didn't. He had a few decent games for them, but then reverted to type - ask any Pompey fan.

callista
Jose Mourinho: "If we had a game tomorrow and I don't have a left-back, I'd have to choose between Paulo, Tal or Glen Johnson. It's very comfortable for a manager to have these players." Is he really sleeping comfortably at nights thinking he has Glen Johnson to choose from? mad_mac
To be honest lads I think we may all be on the same page here in thinking that Johno will not remain a regular Chelsea player. I feel that if Jose had true faith in him he would have been back by now. I liked Johno as a player, but I think he is better as a right sided mid (see his game against Blackburn at Ewood a few years back where he scored a great goal in the dying minutes of a 3-2 thriller), than he is as a RB. Also, as little as Paulo played last year, does anyone else feel that he and johno may be on the bench together, while TBH or Alex (if we get him) play at RB?? Especially if we play with wingers, then we won't need attacking wing backs who can link up, and the defenders will be there merely to defend

The man knows of what he speaks. If we buy a first choice right back I see GJ being the back-up (still young, etc) and Paulo getting sold. If we don't buy another right back I'd personally like to see Diara at right back (with Paulo his back up), with maybe GJ being used if we need someone to play more of a wing-back role. That said, are either Alex or Gentle Ben good at right back?
loz
I hope we don't sign Alves and that Ferreira is re-established as our week in week out right back. Given consistent selection I will wager Enrico's Spectrum 48k that people are soon scratching their heads and asking themselves 'Why was it I wanted an inexperienced defensive midfielder playing out of position at right back ?' bjd
Put Paulo at RB, not CB, not LB but RB. Keep him there and watch the confidence come back and watch the defence become like it was in 2004/5 and watch the threads about 'Right Back' stop. I mustve written something like this about 100 times now!!! In all seriousness RB really isnt an issue - or it shouldnt be.
callista
Actually Johnson wasn't as bad as comments had led me to believe last night playing I thought.... May be he can contribute something next season?
Alan
Johnson was pretty solid last night, although granted it is only one pre-season game.

But still, I'd like to see some more of him - under more pressure this time before saying he's cannon fodder!
