Chelsea break bank for Liga stars Villa, Alves

tribalfootball.com - January 03, 2008

Chelsea boss Avram Grant is ready to splash out £45 million on Spanish Liga stars David Villa and Daniel Alves this month.

The Mirror says with a deal for Lokomotiv Moscow defender Branislav Ivanovic being wrapped up, Chelsea are going back for Sevilla right-back Dani Alves, who was priced out of a move to Stamford Bridge in August. Grant also has the backing of Blues owner Roman Abramovich to bid for Valencia's unsettled strike-ace Villa.

Valencia have signalled Villa could leave for a non-Spanish club if the right offer comes in. Alves, whose on-off move to the Bridge last summer collapsed when Sevilla rejected a £17m bid, is likely to be available as the club seek cash for rebuilding plans.

is anything on that website worth the paper its printed on?

To be fair to them, they are a news feed site. As in, the report pops up somewhere else and only then does it appear on Tribal and its ilk.

If we get Villa, won't that mean we have to play a 442, with him behind the font man? He's only a little fella remember (5'9").

Any-hoo, here's his scoring record:

Sporting de Gijón 80 (38)

Real Zaragoza 73 (31)

Valencia 78 (48)

National team

2005– Spain 23 (13)

As a club they are in financial turmoil, and I could see them being raided of a few of their stars. But won't both these players be cup tied?

There is still the matter of the title, FA Cup and Carling Cup oldbean! :rainbowdance:

Well, touche!!!

However, I think we wouldn't go spending a load on players if they couldn't compete on all fronts

We need premier league proven players now! In the summer we could lure Villa and co. I really think we should buy at least Anelka to be sure not to buy some guy who will be walking outside the Bridge with English for Dummies book in his hands. Alves should be okay since he's got compatriots in Alex and Belletti.

We still are realistically in the race for the title and I don't think we should risk it. Then again the title is in our hands only if we really can improve, so somekind of risk might be in place... 300.gif

Here's Berbatov's record:

CSKA Sofia 50 (25)

Bayer Leverkusen 152 (68)

Tottenham Hotspur 52 (24)

National team2 Bulgaria 061 (39)

And Anelka's record:

Paris Saint-Germain 10 0(1)

Arsenal 90 (28)

Real Madrid 39 0(8)

Paris Saint-Germain 56 (18)

? Liverpool (loan) 22 (5)

Manchester City 103 (46)

Fenerbahçe 57 (16)

Bolton Wanderers 50 (21)

Of all three of them, Berbatov's got the best goal per game ratio, (about 1 in 2). Plus, he's strong, good at holding up the play, very skillful / clever with the ball, and a target man. So if we're looking at getting in some cover for Drogs, I think he's the go. Though he's not very fast, and Anelka is, and speed will fit into the way Grant is trying to get the team's to play. So why not buy both of them! With the added bonus that neither of them need time to 'adapt to the speed of the English game'.

Wouldn't mind having both of them, but if that happens it will be the end of Drogs, who btw is better than those two. I still believe we can keep Drogs. He always moans in some part of the season.

I say, buy (january window):

- Anelka or Berba

- midfielder (I don't think Sidwell has a realistic chance to shine in Chelsea in near future anyway)

- defender (Ivanovic??)

We should have our full strenght line-up by the time we face Olympiacos in the CL 19th of Feb!

I must've been watching the wrong Alves, because I honestly can't see what the fuss is about. 300.gif

He seems to be a decent attacking rightback/winger, but is he really so much better than the other players out there? Maybe I haven't seen enough matches, or I've seen the "wrong ones"... 317.gif

I don't know what we would have done with all these RB's if we had him, Paulo, Belletti and Ivanovic? Also, seeing as we gave Paulo a new 4 year contract, I tink that RB is possibly a position that we are "settled" in?

Easy! We would have a choice from Paulo, Belletti, Ivanovic, and Alves and Grant would play Essien! happy0034.gif

Lovely if those two players come to the club. Alves is by far the best right-back in the world, and Villa is pure class.

Alves is by far the best right-back in the world...

Clearly I've been watching the wrong Alves. The one I've seen isn't even the best rightback in Primera Liga, let alone being head and shoulders above the competition. icon_eek.gif

Alves requires an entire team to be built around him. Thats the reason he's doing so well at Sevilla. He's the main attacking conduit for the side.

Do you think he'll get the same kind of freedom here?

How much can you build a side around a right back?

Does he have his own right back who gets back to cover his forward runs?
