Anyone seen it yet?

I have read ALOT of good things, and it's up for many awards.

Best film this year?....

I've seen it twice.

I must say that I'm disappointed. Before I saw it I read things like "Best movie in a long, long time" and "The Coen Brothers best movie ever" (and some said "best since Fargo").

Hearing that I naturally expected something brilliant.

Well, it wasn't as good as I had expected and maybe that made the movie worse for me than it actually was.

The acting is good. Well, it's great actually. Javier Bardem plays one scary killer. He does it really well even though he basically has the same expression during the entire movie. But that's what makes it good I suppose. He's boring and yet quite scary.

Tommy Lee Jones is great too. And he plays one boring character.

Josh Brolin is good too.

I like the characters even though they are all very depressing. I don't anyone of them smiles once.

The dialogue is typical Coen brothers. Great.

The story itself is simple but good. Man finds lots of money, man gets chased by slightly insane murderer (or assassin might be a better word). Cops try and solve murders made by slightly insane murderer/assassin.

Good movie, yes, but not as good as I had expected.

Still one of the best this year I suppose.

Well, as I said, maybe I was left disappointed because I was expecting too much? Had I seen this movie without expectations then maybe I would have liked it more?

Still, the 2nd time I saw it I really enjoyed the movie. Not one of my favourites but still a good movie.

I've seen Fargo but that was a long, long time ago so I can't remember too much about it besides the fact that it was really good. I also remember that the swedish actor Peter Stormare says "Jävla fitta" in the movie. That's swedish for "F*cking c*nt". Also something I usually shout when I see Stephen Hunt.

The only film from the Coens that I haven't liked is The Ladykillers. That was poor.

I'm not a film buff at all, but I thought it was very good. Full of tension, good acting all round and a nice change from the usual SFX-heavy Hollywood fare.

Having said that, I'm the man who has never seen any of the original Star Wars, so admittedly my opinion might not be worth alot.

i liked the violence in the movie. But the movie just ended abruptly. Fargo is better.

And the prize for biggest geek goes to...LOZ!

This film promises so much, but ultimately, does not deliver.

I loved the first hour and a half. Excellent settings, some great acting, interesting characters (the evil hitman especially), and then it just leaves you hanging like a tit in the breeze.

The way in which it was filmed was brilliant. There wasn't one person in the cinema who wan't glued to the screen, and the complete lack of music just adds to the intensity, however, it leaves too many strings untied to be a satisfying story.

Im guessing it's a film mainly directed at the pretentious art-house community, as you were meant to look at the films 'metaphors' 'symbols' and 'deeper meanings', but it doesn't wash with me.

I like something with a logical conclusion. And this film does'nt have it.

A shame really, because up until the end (last 30 mins), i loved it.

Agree about the ending Elliot. I was actually watching the final 'dream' speech thinking 'ok, so now he's probably going to have a flash of inspiration and go back on the hunt' but then it just ended and I was left a bit frustrated, as the rest of it was so good.

Ambiguous endings can sometimes, sometimes be clever , but unless done very very well they do seem a bit of a cop out.

They can be, yes.

Where do you draw the line?

I have always found that the films that most overtly produce symbols, metaphors and 'meaning' are big-budget hollywood (things like Titanic, Lord of the Rings always have symbols spread liberally through them that act like bludgeons - this thing = that metaphysical meaning).

By the way, my movie collection is not full of films such as Terminator and the like... I consider myself to have a fair degree of intelligence, but just maybe not enough for this film it seems.

Probably not a fan of Barton Fink either. Elliott, have a look at Miller's Crossing if you haven't seen it. Still their best IMO.

I am a big fan of Coen brothers' movies with Miller's Crossing and Big Lebowski being my favorites.

I thought No Country was a good flick, at times very good, but not great. I haven't read a book and i've heard you could understand the story better if you read it, but i felt the whole Tommy Lee Jones sheriff character moping around the countryside and longing for good old times was out of place and pointless.

Bardem and Brolin, on the other hand, were terrific.

Never seen Lebowski. Probably another one to avoid...

Pulp Fiction was okay, just a bit tricky to get your head around the order of filming.

Oh, and i agree Abramovich; Bardem and Brolin were terrific. Which is why i thought it was a shame not to see them have a final meeting of some sorts!?
