i had a thought last night -- why is it that no Premiership clubs have orange as a main color or even a secondary color?

i'm primarily an American sports fan, and some of my favorite clubs have orange featured prominently in the color scheme (Syracuse Orangemen, NY Mets, NY Knicks) and am aware that dozens more use some amount of orange in their uniforms and logos (Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, NY Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Edmonton Oilers, Charlotte Bobcats, Phoenix Suns, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Auburn Tigers, Tennessee Volunteers, Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, Virginia Tech Hokies, Boise State Broncos, Pepperdine Waves...and these are just coming off the top of my head).

so it would just seem too coincidental for Premiership clubs to avoid this color. i'm guessing it has something to do with the whole Protestant-Catholic tensions and the role that orange has historically taken in the UK? or am i thinking too deeply about it? or too ignorant and am about to be informed of the dozens of time orange has been used?

i also know that we used to have orange as a backup color in our mid-90's horror kit that has made all sorts of Halls of Shame, but that is best i could come up with.

Well, the Dutch queen, of the House of Orange-Nassau, has been known to complain about the difficulty of combining orange with any other colour. Although presumably this applies more to her state occasion dress-ups than to, say, her pilates gear, who knows how worried about the same problem the fashion-conscious Premiership players are?

I would think it very unlikely that it has anything to do with religious tensions - in Northern Ireland maybe, but not on the mainland. Maybe we are just not quite so loud and brash as the Yanks!

The only British team I can think of off the top of my head is Dundee United.

Wolves is a kinda orangey / tangeriney thing going on.........

Think it's just a crap colour for football kits to be honest.

bah- holland in orange is iconic.

(I don't even like the colour in most instances either)

No, never liked it - not even when worn by the likes of Cruyff & Gullit.

Iconic shirt? Has to be the Brazil one - especially 1970.

boo!

well at least we can rule you out of that group that actually like tangerine and graphite... can't we? icon_eek.gif

Detested that kit. And it always makes me think of Paul Furlong, so that makes it extra bad.

Ah, Syracuse, my favourite College team. Absolutely gutted they never made the tournamnet, but that is a whole other sports conversation I am not about to start on these forums. Also, they had to drop the 'men" from their title, and are now only known as the Syracuse Orange.

Anyway, I know, being from Scotland, that Orange was predominantly worn by Rangers fans, infact I think it used to be in some of their secondary strips. However, I don't see this as being such a concern in England.

Can't answer why it isn't used that much...but just thought I'd share my thoughts

Scottie, i knew there was a reason i liked you -- I am a Syracuse alum and bleed orange. back in 03 when they won the championship i flew back to NY to catch 2 of the tourney games in Albany, had a blast for 4 straight drunken days. They didn't deserve the tourney this year, but next year we'll be back with a vengence!

as for "Orange" rather than "Orangemen," we'll always be the Orangemen. i don't care what the administration says about it -- it's a stupid name change, and we'll never accept it.

Quite agree mate, we really were on the bubble this whole year as to whehter or not we would make the tournament, and I feel the los of Devendorff was a huge lo for us. Our bench wass small enough, but to take away some maturity from such a young squad was certainly noticeable.

Sorry folks, this has turned into a hi-jacked thread!!!!!

Anyway, assuming that Green doen't try go pro, and with Flynn, Jackon and Okumbu all on the team, I think we have the making of a great team for next season. I wa living in NY in 02, and had basically just been shipped back to Scotland when the Orangemen won the tournament! Was gutted I never made it up to see a basketball tournament, but did go up to see their college football team play North Carolina. One thing that shocked me was the fact that the Carrier Dome was ont air conditioned!
