Away Goals Rule!

Featured Replies

should the away goals rule be scrapped in cup competitions

i think in todays modern football its a waste of time

years ago when it was 1st introduced it was so the away team would attack more to try and gain the advantage

and pitches were of poor quality

in todays game

the pitches are of better quality

with out the away goals rule it would mean teams attacking more awy from home, and not sitting back and qualifying with a single goal

i think arsenal were a victim of the away goals rule against liverpool, they thought they had done enough to go through on away goals and relaxed a little

chelsea also with an away goal against fenerbache, once they had clawed the scores back level had no real need to attack only to sit and defend

opinions please

I think it's a decent rule.

The emphasis of the game changes with every goal, a side leading 1-0 or 2-1 can go out to the away goal in the last minute while they're at home.

Away goals rule does tend to see the away team looking to score, especially if playing away in the 1st game. Manu / Chelsea / Liverpool and Barca all scored away from home last week.

To scrap the rule would lead to more cautious, defensive play away from home. IMHO

I'm think it is a good rule and should be kept. I think if it was removed we would soon go back to the days of away teams showing up fully intending to see out a 0-0 draw. That rule, and the pass back rule, are two rules which have benefited the game in terms of making it better to watch in my opinion.

Looking at how many clean sheets we have kept at home in the CL this season, it's a great rule for Chelsea as we dont give away many goals to away teams.

have they changed it so the away goals only count after extra time? i know they hve in some comps, not sure about europe. i think thats an excellent change to the rule.

It allways seems unfair when your team is dumped out on the away goals rule. But it is a good rule, it makes the games more interesting and if not for the rule we'd have far more games going to penalties (something most of us really do not want to see).
