Technically, we haven't really been playing with a left midfielder. In a 4-4-3 Lampard will be left of Ballack or Essien. Malouda/Cole/Kalou are really playing forward. So the first question we need to answer is are we going to play with 3 or 4 in midfield?

Are we allowed any other options?

From what I know, Scolari seems to prefer a 4-2-3-1. So we do play 2 wide men and attacking midfielder behind the striker. And over here, I am talking about a wide player who goes forward.

What I mean is a wide forward who plays on the left-hand side (can someone please change the poll title/topic title to a wide forward on the left-hand side!!).

And Joe Cole is not mentioned as I am not talking about the right-side, and I do not mean to overlook him.

i'm just saying why is there a need to keep looking at bringing in players, when we already have players at the club that we know can do the job

joe cole would be excellent down the left on a regular basis, and with sol kalou as cover, the position is filled

And who plays on the right?

David Silva- He is the typical quick pixie, with a wide-ranging box of tricks. He plays wide left for Spain, but his future is most likely in the hole, where he can best display his range of passing and his shot from distance. He is stronger than his slight build suggests and is not afraid to mix it with the opposition.

Reminiscent of . . . Gianfranco Zola

Just read that from The Times Link

He was very good yesterday for Spain although it wasn't the best team performance, but he kept trying to get a goal. and also he's on Valenica so he and Villa coming over would be a nice deal.

I say Podolski for 4 reasons.

1) He's had an excellent tournament so far

2) He can score goals when he comes in from the left.

3) He's got one heck of a shot on him

4) He can play as a striker aswell.

;)

Either him or Arshavin would be a good buy me thinks.

I don't see that the position is filled at all. If last season showed us anything it is that neither of those players is the answer to any of our problems. The left and right wide players is exactly where we need to strengthen. If we had had more quality in these areas last season we may well have won both the title and the CL.

I'm afraid, i don't share your optimism.

Joe had a good but short spell and for the most part had a season to forget.

Kalou is frustratingly inconsistent, not a winger, can't cross and wastes too much possession because he keeps making wrong decisions. He's probably better suited to a second striker role. It must be said, he's not a youngster like Di Santo that can bide his time and work on his development. As far as i'm concerned if he wants to have a future in the club then the next season will be crucial for him,Kalou needs to finally deliver or move on to pastures new.

Malouda is slow, ineffective, can't go past players and doesn't seem to give a crap.

I'm not going to even bother with SWP, he's had plenty of chances over three seasons and pretty much failed to take any.

He is a good lad and i really wanted him to succeed but he's simply not good enough.

Sinclair is still raw.

So we basically have five wingers in our books and not one of them is a genuine world class player or anywhere near that level. I'd say bringing in new players to strengthen this area is pretty much a must.

I think playing 4-4-3 is cheating unless we're going in without a keeper

i agree with you abramovich (hope that doesnt sound to much like kenyon arse licking  )

i just think with a little bit of encouragement, like what jose give him, cole could do the job just as good as those mentioned in the list

Kalou, I really think he will be a great player for us this season. You can't say the lad doesn't love the club. When we lost in the CL final, he ran to the bench and sobbed his eyes out. Quiet guy, young, great talent, goes about his business. I really think this might be the year our African players flourish. Kalou, Mikel, and Essien

Form this bunch, and IMO on this order:

Robinho (not so much a wide forward, more of a "free" forward)

Podolsky (a fine player, and although definitly not a "wide forward", could fill in).

Zhirkov

Schweinsteiger (although he's not left footed, and preferentially a right midfielder).

Ribery

Arshavin (See Podolsky. Inconsistent)

Silva

Quaresma (Mr. Inconsistency and troublemaker himself)

On the Scolari's favorite formation issue. I strongly feel he's not a definite adept of this or that formation. For Brazil he used wing backs, but try to keep in mind they had Cafu and Roberto Carlos and no wingers. Portugal the opposite, plenty of wingers, and used to play on a 433 from early ages.

I have this feeling - and taking into account our squad (only one winger in Malouda since SWP is out as it seems) - we need forwards. Not necessarily "wide" forwards, just forwards (not Strikers!). Thinking of what's happening on all the major formations on the world, the typical winger or even a wide forward is a rare breed. More and more what's been happening is a use of a very mobile front. Think of ManUtd or Barça for instance. 3 (or 2 at least) front very mobile forwards.

Now picture us playing with - for instance - Shevchenko/Drogba, then Kalou/Joe Cole, or even Shevchenko/Drogba/Anelka with Robinho, Ronaldinho, Messi (one can always dream), Eto'o, etc etc. I'm thinking Scolari is going to try a more narrow formation with the purchase of 1 or 2 creative/mobile forwards, with width given by the full backs.

Totally agree with you.

Last season he improved as the season went along and now I feel he's gotten used to the pace of the Prem. and will be one of our best players next season.

He should take the place of Malouda on the left, Joey on the right and then bring in a new striker to play through the middle. You know it makes sense ::clap2::
