Thing is ... had it been in any other area of the pitch, a foul would have been awarded. As it was in the PK area, the ref didn't have the balls to award the foul, and of course, penalty. It was ridiculous. Cheers, Butch

I agree with Just...Robben needs to start doing it consistently. Without doubt, he's our biggest "creative", attacking threat (and by creative, I mean more in the "creating" sense than in the "wonderful myriad of solutions" sense for he's quite the one trick pony). Having him on the pitch and not having him on the pitch makes one heck of a difference, and in that respect I'd be pretty distraught to see him leave. But consistency is not part of his game right now, and injuries aside, he needs to begin putting performances together on a consistent basis. He is a really important part of our team. I'm in two minds about his defensive responsibilities though. Considering how easily injured he is, I tend to get really worried when I see him attempt to put in a challenge. Joe Cole was able to beef up considerably, but then speed is not his most important asset. I don't know how such an approach would affect Robben's game. If Robben can regain match sharpness AND keep fit for the rest of the season, he WILL be an important part of our drive for success though; of that I am certain. I'm getting a little tired of the "choker" formation myself. Cheers, Butch

Dear Friends, I only allow people to predict 5 substitutes, whether it is in the EPL, FAC, CC or CL. This means that, you can predict any 5 substitutes out of the 7 allowed for CL matches. People who add #6 and #7 do not get points for those names; only for 1-5. I've been giving people points in cases where they tell me before hand that "if I can only name 5 substitutes, please take so-and-so and so-and-so off the list", etc..., but please name just the 5 to reduce the confusion for you and me. Dear Friends, As we move into the final stretch of the season, we now enter the realm of cup games that potentially need extra time and penalties to win. To try and clear up and potential confusions, here are the rules: For Cup matches where a result is required, and where extra time may be played, I will allow extra time score progressions to be predicted, with correct predictions receiving 5 points each. For example, if I think Chelsea will beat Arsenal 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw after extra time in the Carling Cup final, I might predict this: 1-0, ht, 1-1, xt, 2-1, xht, 2-2, ft, win on penalties. If I am absolutely correct, I will get 40 points. Please note that I give 5 points each for ht, xt and xht but not for ft. I never give points for ft anyway because I already give points for correct full time score. And you don't need to predict by how many goals we'll win or lose a penalty shoot-out (just whether we will win or lose). Hope this clears things up for you. Cheers, Butch

I thought the boy Diarra done good. We rested Makalele and didn't miss a beat. Prior to this season, he always looked promising but I always had my doubts about him replacing Maka. Now, I am more and more confident the boy can do it. We certainly have a gem. Norwich certainly played well enough. They didn't stand back and defend the whole time, but had some nice counter attacks that caused us some problems. Kudos to them. Dickson Etuhu, Nigerian I think, played quite well for them (not just the shot that hit the post). Huckerby was a threat throughout, but he was pretty isolated. Anyway, another game where we've played mediocre and won big. It is not a bad thing to be able to do. What I wasn't too happy about was Robben's selfishness. On more than one occasion, the pass was on for one of his team mates (Drogba, Sheva) but he decided to go it alone. You can imagine his team mates weren't well pleased. Roll on the quarterfinals. Once again, I'm with Loz on the SWP issue - #1 for me. Although SWP was quite the player at Man City, he was a big fish in a small pond, and almost EVERYTHING went through him so he was seeing a lot of the ball. With Chelsea, players have to make do with whatever possession they get, and under pressure to impress with fewer opportunities. But apart from the psychological strain that may take its toll, I always felt that SWP doesn't have the physique to do well for Chelsea. There was a time when this might not have been the case, e.g. when Robben and Duff were primarilly "strikers" being fed over the top by Frank and Guddy. In that case, SWP's speed would have been useful. However, you don't see that aspect of our game much anymore - I think teams defend deeper against us to combat the threat of, say, a Robben. The amount of times SWP is knocked off the ball, loses possession in "dangerous" positions, runs into blind alleys, and then to top it off foul the opposition thus giving them an easy route to clearing the threat during games is just totally frustrating for me. I suppose another reason I didn't want SWP at the time was because we were rumored to be after Joaquin at about the same time, and I felt that the Spaniard was the more accomplished player - technically, physically and tactically. But anyway...I still hope he comes good (he's looked a little more involved in the past 3-4 games he's played for us). Yet, at the end of the season if this has not happened, I wouldn't be shedding any tears to see him move on. Cheers, Butch

What worries me about the Mikel Nigeria situation is that he, supposedly of course, played against the wishes of Jose. Don't know where that places him in Jose's eyes (if it was really the case). I just feel he has clearly improved over the past 3-4 games for us and is looking much more like the player we thought we signed. Cheers, Butch

Who you kdding, mate; at this rate we need ANOTHER goal keeper, left back and two central defenders. On a serious note, I'd take him. Partly because he is quality. Partly because he won't be fit the whole season and so would not really be expecting to play the whole season. Partly because we are supposed to have a great medical team (and facilities). I think we should be able to keep him fit for the majority of the season, during which time we could rest RC or JT from time to time to allow THEIR bodies to rest and recover, thereby keeping THEM fit. I agree with Loz (and Jose) with regards to Sheva - I felt that was his most "involved" game for us. But for a few sloppy touches and a few great saves, he would have scored a brace and been given MoM by all and sundry. I am pleased that he has kept his recent improvement going in the right direction. This cannot be a good sign for any of our rivals, be it in England or in Europe. I also wanted to say that, once again, I was extremely impressed by both Diarra AND Mikel. Lassana is learning, and I believe will improve with games under his belt. For instance, he needs to learn when to go forward and attack, and when to stay back, and he really needs to learn when to pass the ball rather than give it away in disadvantageous positions. However, all in all, he has made us look a more fluid passing team when he has played, as he always makes himself available for the pass. The same could be said of Mikel, who over the past three games has shown a huge improvement. He looks more aggressive with his positioning and his running and passing. What used to be Ballack-esque side passes and back passes is now forward passes and through balls from around the edge of the box. In terms of making use of the ball as well as retaining possession, I feel Mikel is ahead of Diarra, and is quite impressive for a boy of his age (the promise is beginning to manifes itself in something tangible on the field, as far as I'm concerned). This bodes well for the future. Yes, Ballack had one of his better games, but he's still nowhere near his best. But again, I prefer to dwell on the positives - that is, we're moving in the right direction. And again, this does not bode well for our opponents. I also wanted to say I am a tad disappointed that we didn't sign a central defender before the deadline. Though Essien has looked good since Carvalho got back from injury/illness, I believe it is a false dawn. He is no CB and as such we shouldn't expect him to be able to play that position without any problems each game. Against better opposition than Wigan, Wycombe, Forest and Blackburn we could suffer big time. True, rumors have it that JT will be back soon, and Cech has made a huge difference to our defense, but with Boulahrouz out long-term (and not in good nick anyway), and with JT's bad back (herniated disk is no cup of soup, believe me) I have a feeling we will be seeing Essien play that role again at some point this season. And at the tail end of a season, you'd expect that there will be some really important games that Essien may have to play there. We may not want to sign players willy nilly, to come in to solve a short-term problem, but I believe we are 1 CB short anyway in our squad, and we should have looked to strengthen. A 4th choice center back signing would not have gone amiss. I still really liked the idea of Tal Ben Haim as that utility 4th choice CB. Now, we'll just have to live in fear, and hope that JT and Riccy stay fit for the rest of the season. Cheers, Butch
