Abide with me, the traditional anthem/hymn sung at the FA cup final.

This year a gospel choir sung it a Wembley:

A...... traditions were upheld, and it added to the Wembley experience

B....... it was completely mullered and took a little something away from the day

Very true. Couldn't really hear them from where I was (yes I know I'm deaf but even so I usually hear the music). Wembley just doesn't seem cut out to create the atmosphere we've come to expect.

Yeah, but why? I'm just wondering what a song like that has to do with football.

The girl singing the national anthem afterwards was far better, and far more relevant.

bah the national anthem is a waste of time, it pledges allegiance to the royal family rather than the country.

abide with me is THE fa cup song.

I heard a preview before the game of what it would be like and thought it could be good.

we sat very close to the choir and while I don't think traditions were NOT upheld, I can't say it worked either. was difficult to hear properly and join in, which was unfortunate. it was bad, but not untraditional. giving people from the grassroots from london an opportunity to perform was also good.

having some girl from a simon cowell money spinning vehicle do some singing was worse in my view. (even though the singing itself was better suited)

It's traditional to sing the hymn, but I honestly think they ruined it, by not singing in a traditional way.

Why feel the need to 'jazz it up' or Americanize it like the U.S usually do when a sould diva sings their national anthem.

The crowd couldn't get envolved as they (the group) were layering the vocals.

Complete waste of time and mullered a hymn I hold dear for sentimental and personal reasons.

On a plus side....... it was nice to see Liverpool's White Wembleys suits had found a 2nd home

haha we were saying that when they walked out in front of us.

like I said- I don't think it worked, but I don't think traditions were not upheld, if you see what I mean.

I didnt hear the version sung at this year's FA cup, but having watched old renditions at games on youtube, it does seem to lose alot when its an individual singer or backed by the wrong music. It sounds hokey and silly.

However, done properly, this song can literally give me chills.

"Where is death's sting? Where grave thy victory?

I triumph still, if thou abide with me."

pure pure class

P.S. this post was partially an attempt to get the name T*m He**ing Ov**bo off the top of this page :D

It was sung at my Uncle's funeral last week and it's a miserable, depressing dirge which I'll be glad if I never hear again. I've told my wife that I want Blue is the Colour at my funeral!

One of my friends actually wants the song Ha Ha You're Dead by Green Day at his funeral. Always one for humour that one.
